Last night another storm came through our area. (I am tired of thunderstorms, and my heart goes out to all those who’ve been affected by the massive amount of tornadoes we’ve had this year.) As the storm continued to get stronger, I decided to sneak into the t.v. room and check the weather while the kids were playing with their daddy.
That’s when I heard my husband, “Peanut, come here and check this out! It’s hailing…” At exactly the same time the weather person on the t.v. announced a tornado warning in our area, and was talking about the way the storm’s tail was acting and how we should seek cover immediately.
I flicked off the t.v. and went back to the living room, “No, no, we aren’t watching the hail right now; everyone go to the basement,” was my reply. They all looked at me like I was nuts. I quickly told my husband what the news said, that the little village (there used to be a sign saying “population 52”) that we live near was mentioned on the news as being in a tornado warning.
“Mommy, why are we going downstairs?” asked Peanut. I reassured her that I just thought they’d like to go play in their play area before bed, and off we all went. I found the radio downstairs and turned it on so we could keep updated, and tried to relax by working on the spring cleaning I started down there and hadn’t finished. (What can I say? Sometime throwing stuff out or freecycling it is soothing to me.) Thankfully the storm passed quickly and once the tornado warning was over we went back upstairs to get the kids into bed. I wanted to check the weather again to see if there might be a need to carry our sleeping babies downstairs to sleep, and my husband found the Weather Channel online so I could see the line of storms coming through.
I haven’t forgotten that this is supposed to be a Thankful Thursday post, quite the opposite. I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful the numerous storms we have had here so far have been mostly just thunderstorms and a little hail last night (I heard some of the hail was close to 4 inches, so maybe little is the wrong adjective there…). I am also thankful for the many differences between mommies and daddies. I have grown to hate storms so much more now that I am a mother, while my husband still finds a thrill in watching them pass, and wants to share that with our children. They need that. They need someone who isn’t freaking out inside – At 3 ½ and 2 they need to feel secure in their home and safe. So even though I didn’t let them linger at the glass door to watch the hail, I’m thankful they have a daddy who wants to teach them about storms and not to just be afraid of them.

Amazing that you stayed so calm – I would’ve been more freaked out. My friend is moving across the country…and they stopped in a small town for a potty break and some nice people ended up pulling them into their house to wait out a tornado. The tornado went right down the road they would’ve been on. I’m grateful for nice people like that who look out for strangers who need help.

Wow. That is super cool that someone cared enough to pull them into their own home. I’m glad they are okay and that there are people like that still in our world!

Something about being a mom seems to make you worry about things that didn’t bother you before. Lightning, thunder, and hail never bothered me until I had kids. Now I can’t sleep when there is a storm because I am terrified I will not hear the tornado siren.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who can’t sleep during storms for that same reason! Here’s hoping the tornadoes are over for the season; there have been way too many on the news this year!

I’m glad you guys are all o.k. and that the storms didn’t destroy anything.

Glad the storm passed without damage. Seems like so many tornadoes this season! My heart goes out to all those who have lost everything. I usually am glued to the t.v. and radio and internet when we get bad weather forecast. Hope the weekend is better!

I am glad you are missing the brunt of the storms. What a great gift you have been given! A husband who can show the wonders of storms is a gift.

As someone who lives in a mild weather area (Pittsburgh—worse we usually get are blizzards) I can’t even comprehend the level of fear that must go through a person living in tornado-prone areas. I’m very glad you guys made it through with nothing worse than hail!

Thanks! I thought Thankful Thursday was an original idea, until I started reading some more blogs – it seems a lot of people do it! LOL. I guess you really can’t invent the wheel…
