So, we got back from vacation and my dear husband went straight on nights, which means NO laundry getting done (and boy do I have laundry to do!). It also means trying to keep kids semi quiet while Daddy sleeps, not an easy task since it has rained a bit since we came home and they are now used to going outside every morning. But, except for the “tap dancing contest” the kids had on the kitchen floor, I think he slept okay…
Twice this week this has been my day:
Crazy kids, neither wanting to actually listen to Mommy. Pretty sure being tired and being cooped up had something to do with that… So along comes the toddler’s nap time…. I usually rock Monkey 15 minutes after we all read a few books. Then he goes into bed. Sometimes he falls asleep while I rock him, sometimes he waits to fall asleep on his own in bed. Then I usually have a little time with the preschooler before her “quiet time”. Well, on these two days Monkey fell asleep with his arms wrapped around the pillow on the rocking chair. When I stood with him, he woke and then cried/screamed in his bed, refusing to go back to sleep. (With my little boy, once he has fallen asleep and woken up, he figures that’s his nap…)
So, since he wasn’t falling asleep I chose to rock the preschooler a bit (she thought this was great). She wound up falling asleep (a blessing, since I think she needed a nap, not just quiet time…). I laid her on my bed so she could rest, since by then her brother was even louder.
“Mommy!” He screamed. Okay, this time it was frantic, and like a mother can tell, I just KNEW something was wrong, so I decided not to make him wait until nap time should be over and went to check on him.
There was poop all over his bed. (Yes, this happened twice this week.) “Mommy! Cars!” He cried. After all, his car sheets were ruined in his eyes.
“Oh, Sweetie, it’s just poopie.” I assured him. “Mommy can clean it.”
“Clean! Clean!”
So I pulled the poop-smeared sheets from the bed and went to get diapers from the living room to change my little guy. As I stepped into the living room my foot went “SPLASH!” Yes, there was a puddle. Left by my 7 year old dog. G-R-E-A-T.
I grabbed the carpet cleaner and a cloth to wipe up the carpet; put the dog outside so she could finish her job, and went back to my Monkey to change his diaper.
“Woof! Woof!” The dog barked nonstop at the door, the preschooler was rudely woken from her much needed nap, and was disoriented since she wasn’t in her own room…. There was tears, and lots of drama.
The dirty diaper eventually got cleaned. New sheets were put on the bed, and Mommy had the brilliant idea of letting them watch a Clifford video for a while until they were all calmed down again.
As I said, this happened twice last week… Once would have been enough, really, but I guess I’m just lucky that way… I’m hoping this week nap time is a little more “normal”, if there is such a thing with kids.
