When we decorated the tree earlier this week, my son’s first reaction was, “Santa’s coming!” I think he was pretty sure he’d wake up to presents in the morning. At 4 and 2 1/2 neither one really understands the concept of time (well, except for, “You have 1 minute in the corner…”).
So that night after dinner we threw together a quick “count down ’till Christmas” chain. The preschooler had fun using the purple glue stick to build our paper chain.Once it was finished, we counted all the links and I explained that each link was a day we had before Christmas. We hung it above the family calendar in the kitchen. It’s not super creative, but it is giving them a visual to help them in the big wait for Christmas.
How are you counting down the days with the kids?

Oh this sounds just perfect for preschoolers. Oh you’re making me feel guilty! 🙂

It’s not really creative, but my little girl did enjoy putting it together.
You’ve been busy – give yourself a break! 🙂

This is such a great idea to help with the concept of time even for other events besides Christmas. My mom is away and my daughter has no idea whether she’s coming back tomorrow or in 3 weeks time. I love this!

You’re right, it would work great in many situations for little ones to keep track of when events will be happening. And I have to say my little girl loved putting them together in a pattern.

I love the count down to Christmas idea. We have a similar issue in our home, our 4-year-old asks every morning if it is Christmas and a count down chain would help remind him how many more days till Christmas. Thank you for saving my sanity!
