My kindergartner and preschooler are super close. When she first started kindergarten it was hard for him to understand where his best friend was all day. A little more that a month later and he still can’t wait for her to come home each day so they can play together.
The problem is, kindergarten wears her out! She needs some down time when she gets home or she can get pretty cranky by dinner time.
I filled the bottom of our bin with some orange rainbow rice. (I love how it got a variety of shades, some a dark red-orange and some a golden yellow-orange, when we mixed it. It reminds me of the fall leaves on the ground.)
Then I added some acorns from a recent walk, a couple sunflowers, some clear plastic fall table scatter I found at the Target dollar area (I love Target!), and a few animals we associate with fall (a few deer and a squirrel).
The preschooler couldn’t wait to share it with his sister when she got home!
And then the preschooler had the fun idea of dropping the pumpkin-shaped table scatter (you can barely see them in the picture of the bin because they blend in with the rice) through a paper towel tube that was nearby.
That activity kept them both entertained for a lot longer than I ever would have imagined.
They played quietly side by side for almost an hour. The best part? Little brother got to play with his sister as soon as she got home from school, but it was a calm enough activity that she got to get the break she needed, and that meant no drama and Mommy was able to make dinner in peace!
What kinds of quiet activities do your kids enjoy doing together? I’d love some more ideas to try for when we get home from school!
