Sometimes life gets busy. One of the best parts of homeschooling preschool is the freedom we have in our schedule.
This week for our alphabet activities with vehicles we had school time on the weekend, which meant my kindergartner got to be involved, too.
For our letter “K” vehicle activities we focused on kayaks.

Letter “K” Activities with Vehicles
We started off our letter “K” activities by reading a cute book we found at the library: A Cat in a Kayak.
While we looked at the beautiful pictures, we talked about the similarities and differences between a kayak and a canoe.
They’d never seen a real kayak before, but they’ve been in a canoe. It helps kids to relate to something if you compare it to something they are familiar with.
Once we finished reading the book, we took our knowledge of kayaks and did a little experiment.
What Floats?
Since kayaks float on the water, we experimented to see what objects could float.
I collected a few items for our experiment before hand: wooden blocks, craft foam, pennies, large plastic beads, craft sticks, bottle caps, and a few more items. I had them guess whether each item would float or sink before they placed it in our tub of water.
Pretty soon they were collecting their own items to check and see what would float.
Preschoolers love seeing what floats! (But remember, never leave a child unattended when water is involved.)
Check out our plastic egg submarines for more floating fun.
Letter “K” Scavenger Hunt
Next we did a scavenger hunt for objects that start with the letter “K.”
They came back with a toy kangaroo and a key.
That decorated hand print? My daughter drew a kraken. (Yes, the mythical sea creature that resembles a giant squid.) I love that she thought of that one!
Finally, it was time to create our own kayaks!
Kayak Craft
I drew the basic shape of a kayak on construction paper ahead of time.
After they wrote “K is for kayak” at the top, they used a paintbrush to apply craft glue to their kayak.
Next we sprinkled (okay, they poured) colored sand across the glue, lifting the paper and moving the sand so it would stick to the glue and color their kayaks.
Of course the kayaks needed paddles.
A craft stick with paddle ends made of card stock made the perfect paddles.

Thanks! It was originally meant just for my preschooler, but his kindergartner sister had a lot of fun doing it with us. 🙂
