A few weeks ago my son became obsessed with the idea of Turbo, you know, the snail that becomes super fast. The idea of a snail racing cars had him tickled, and even though he hadn’t gotten to see the movie in the theater, we had read the picture book from the library and he talked about it constantly.
The movie wasn’t out on video yet, but they had the soundtrack at the library, so I picked it up for us to listen to in the car.
The music is not really my type, but that didn’t bother me too much. What bothered me is that a soundtrack for a children’s movie contains music that isn’t appropriate for children.
Some of the songs on the soundtrack are from Snoop Dogg. One of the songs starts off:
When the pimp’s in the crib ma
Drop it like it’s hot
Drop it like it’s hot
Drop it like it’s hot
When the pigs try to get at ya
Park it like it’s hot
Park it like it’s hot
Park it like it’s hot
And if a n— get a attitude
Pop it like it’s hot
Pop it like it’s hot
Pop it like it’s hot
Okay, so they bleeped out the N-word on the movie soundtrack. But really, is the rest of it anything you want your young children listening to? I don’t want to have to explain what a pimp is to my preschooler. And the derogatory slang for a police officer doesn’t make me much happier.
We hadn’t seen the movie before, but I didn’t think I’d have to preview the soundtrack to a kid’s movie before playing it for my kids in the car. This is a movie geared towards preschoolers and early elementary aged children!
I was trying to reach the button so the CD would skip to the next song when I heard:
I keep a blue flag hanging out my backside
But only on the left side, yeah that’s the C– side
Once again, they had bleeped out the word Crip, but seriously! Do you want your children listening to a song full of gang references?
And don’t think that little kids can’t understand the words when they sing them so fast! When I hit the wrong button and just forwarded the song ahead instead of hitting the skip button, we heard:
See I specialize in making all the girls get naked
“Mommy, why are the girls all getting naked?” asked my 6 year-old daughter from the backseat.
Yep, this is exactly the song I want my young, impressionable children listening to. NOT!
I have to question why they would include such a song on a kid’s movie to begin with. There HAS to be better songs that they could choose from. When I looked up the song’s lyrics online, I was floored! The entire song is inappropriate for kids. (Look it up yourself and see what I mean!)
I’m disappointed, DreamWorks. As parents we shouldn’t have to worry about what songs our kids might hear in a kid’s movie or on the movie soundtrack.

Seriously???? This is a complete turn-off. My kiddos wanted this movie (we haven’t seen it yet) but I don’t think it’ll be added to our collection. Wow!

My husband brought the movie home, and for the brief amount of time they played that song, they really could have left it out of the soundtrack. Or better yet, picked a different song all together. We won’t be getting the soundtrack — the one we have is going back to the library.

We watch all the kids movies before they see them. After seeing a villan’s shadow which showed he had been hung in some vines from Tarzan we ALWAYS watch them now.

We haven’t seen Tarzan…Thanks for the heads up on that one! We tend to view all the kid movies we bring home before the kids see them, too. I just didn’t even think when I picked up the soundtrack for us to listen to… But I will be previewing all the music from now on, too! Even though she only heard it once, my daughter can still remember that line about girls getting naked… Not what I want for my daughter!

Thanks for the warning! We definitely won’t be viewing that one. I wish moviemakers would get a clue and stop pushing their perverse agendas on our innocent children.

The movie itself only played a tiny bit of the song. They really could have picked a different song… What bothered me more is that the song is on the soundtrack for the movie — and the lyrics are right there for our kids to hear.

I’m not happy to hear this. Our children are exposed to enough negativity and evil in our world without these type of songs. I’m with you on this. It’s a sad time when parents have to first review music and movies made for children.

Wow, that’s disgusting! I honestly have never ever thought to even watch or listen to a movie before my son watches it (he’s 2) and now I will think twice. Our children pick things up so easily and this is something I don’t want to have to be explaining to my son. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention.
OneMommy says
I just don’t see the point of putting it on the soundtrack CD. It has nothing to do with the plot of the movie or the characters; it’s simply vulgar.
Ginny Marie says
WHAT?!? Why aren’t more parents outraged about this? Those songs are totally inappropriate for a kids’ movie!
OneMommy says
They really, really are! While I like to watch movies before the kids, I never thought I’d have to listen to the soundtrack before hand.
Sara R says
This occurred to me even before I had children, but it didn’t worry me much then. I have been giving it more thought as of recently. Thank you for so eloquently putting it to words.

I so agree with you! I wonder if the people who make these movies actually have young children of their own! Thanks for linking up with the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. I have pinned your post to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Board!
OneMommy says
Yes, I wonder if they have kids, too!
Thanks for pinning it!
JanetGoingCrazy says
Oh my goodness, I totally did NOT catch that during the movie! My son is very much into music and singing the lyrics to his favorite songs so this would definitely disturb me. This makes me sad!
OneMommy says
I didn’t catch it in the movie either — I’m thinking it must have been a very short clip in the movie. Which is why I wonder why they added it to the soundtrack at all.
Cameon says
Definitely did not even think about the soundtrack for a kid’s movie being something I have to think about. Or really even the need to screen movies such as Tarzan and Turbo. Definitely something to think about to a certain extent.
Shell says
Those aren’t topics I want my kids talking about, either! Geez… I get that a lot of kids’ movies put in humor that goes over the kids’ heads but makes the adults laugh, but you’d think they’d be more careful about the music.
OneMommy says
Tell me about it! My kids LOVE music, and even though they only heard that particular song once, my daughter is STILL talking about it!
