With colder temperatures and icy weather, we usually find ourselves inside a lot more. That makes December perfect for crafting with the kids.
Besides, there are just so many fun kids Christmas crafts & activities to do!
One of my daughter’s favorite crafts so far has been this simple 3-D Christmas tree craft she made for her dollhouse.
3-D Christmas Tree Craft
Materials Needed:
- Thin Cardboard or Poster Board
- Scissors
- Paint, Crayons, or Markers
- Small Stickers (optional)
Start by drawing and cutting out two identical tree shapes from your cardboard or poster board. We made ours about 6 inches tall.
I suggest drawing the tree shape on one piece and then putting the two pieces of cardboard on top of each other and cutting out both trees at once. Or you could cut out the first one and then trace it on the second piece of cardboard.
For very young kids (toddlers) you may want to do this step.
Then cut a slit down the middle of each – stopping 1/4″ from the top on one and 1/4″ from the bottom on the other one.
Have your child color both sides of the trees green.
They can use paint for this, crayons or markers. Paint works the best, but my daughter chose crayon, and it was HER tree after all.
If you use paint, let the paint dry thoroughly before the next step.
Once the trees are green on both sides, slide the two pieces of cardboard together, so that the one with the slit starting at the bottom slides into the top slit of the other tree. You can use some clear tape to keep it together if desired.
Have your child decorate the tree with small stickers or permanent marker.
This little 3-D Christmas tree craft is perfect for decorating a doll house. It would also be a great tree for Thomas the Train or as a table decoration.

I love your tree and seeing a well played with dollhouse. Encouraging imagination is so very important, theirs as well as ours. I am sure she will be able to come up with something for under the tree. Right now the pups look great.

We are making a few small gifts later this week. I actually have two dollhouses in storage right now, so I’m loving this little bit of creativity in the dollhouse myself!

What a fun craft! We did a similar craft last week and the kids spent forever making their trees. Best thing about crafts, if you ask me!

Oh, how I love creativity! I’m not that creative when it comes to things like this. Marketing, social media writing – yes. And I guess those are all creative things. But for some reason the right side of my brain shuts down when it comes to arts & crafts. So happy your right-side still works :).

I think the kids make me be more creative than I would normally be. At the end of the day I’m just glad I can put together a coherent sentence when talking to the husband! 🙂

That is a cute idea! I’m going to do this with Ash & Bean this weeked so they can decorate the desks in the bedrooms. They can always pull it down to play Christmas with their Littlest Pet Shops. They are going to love this! Thanks so much for sharing!

I used thin cardboard, but I would think cardstock would work, too.

Thank you — we just wanted a little one that would stand on its own for the dollhouse.
