My son is obsessed with cars. I guess this is typical of 2 year old boys, right?
It just made sense that he have a car birthday cake for his 2nd birthday.
This cake would be cute for a toddler boy’s birthday. You may also like my tractor cake & cupcakes.

Car Birthday Cake
Start with your favorite cake mix. I used a regular boxed cake mix.
Pour the batter into two loaf pans instead of a regular cake pan and bake until done.
Once the cakes have cooked, let them cool completely. Then freeze both cakes for a couple hours to make it easier to cut without the cake crumbling.
Once they are out of the freezer, place one cake on a tray. Use a serrated bread knife to slice off the rounded top of half the cake, making it flat so you can put the second layer on.
Cut the other loaf cake in half. Use a thin layer of icing on the bottom cake and sit half of the second loaf on top.
Use a can of regular white cake icing and keep a small portion white to use for the windows later.
With the rest of the icing use food coloring to make the car blue (or whatever color is desired). Apply the colored icing on the main body of the car, leaving the front window area plain. (You can leave places for side windows, but I opted to make it more simple.)
Use the remaining white icing to make a front window on the car.
It will look a little rough at first, but if you outline it with black decorating icing it will look more finished.
Then add 4 chocolate sandwich cookie “wheels”.
The hood of the car is the perfect place to use decorator icing to add a number for the age of the birthday boy. Or, you could write “happy birthday” on it.
You should still have half a loaf cake left. You can wrap it and freeze it to eat at a later date.
Or, you can easily turn it into a pair of gas pumps.
Just cut it in half. Ice both halves and use black decorator icing to make a small rectangle on the front of each and write “Gas” in the rectangle. You can draw a hose and pump handle on the side with decorator icing, too.
I added crumbled cookie crumbs to create a road for our car to sit on.
This is a super simple way to make a 3-dimensional car cake that any toddler or preschooler will love.

Thanks! Last year I did a princess castle for her… So I’m all set if she leans that way again this year. Which means, of course, she’ll have some other idea for me to figure out! LOL.
