A little while ago I did a post on some cute toilet paper tube bugs my daughter and I made to hang in the downstairs play area.
This week we made some cute toilet paper tube dinosaur puppets, and the kids had a blast!
You can find the templates for these dinosaurs, and tons of other characters, at D L T K’s Growing Together.
The first thing they did was color their templates. I’m not sure they really understood how all the pieces would fit together in the end, but they both had fun decorating their dinos.
After the pieces were all colored I cut out the pieces for them. Since Peanut is 3 ½ and has started using her own pair of scissors, I let her cut out the rectangles that make up the dinosaur bodies (check out her cutting skills…we have some work ahead of us!).
I quickly learned that a glue stick wasn’t going to work on the cardboard tubes. It wouldn’t have dried fast enough for them to play with their puppets right away anyway… So we used Scotch tape. Peanut loves to help tape things together.
Monkey just wanted to have the glue stick back; he kept saying “Gluuuuuue” in the cutest little voice.
We skipped using the popsicle sticks the site suggested; their little fingers fit in the bottom to make them into puppets. Plus, they had fun just holding them around the body and making them roar at each other.
Stay tuned for more cardboard tube ideas I found!

I love it! My kids loved toilet paper roll “puppets” when they were little. I don’t know how many different sets of all kinds we had laying around the house. It’s a great way to keep them busy and to encourage creative play. Have a great weekend!

Yes, they had tons of fun making them; even my not yet 2 year old was able to participate a little. I’m not sure how long they will last, but they’re having fun with them!

That’s the fun part. They can always make more!

You can do so many things with toilet paper tubes! I’m not sure what glue sticks are for – they never seem to make anything stick. Had to teach the boys the wonder of hot glue when they were little. Now they are masters with it!

Yes, glue sticks tend to cause us more trouble than they’re worth sometimes… LOL. But thankfully my daughter loves tape, so it worked out.
