I try to have at least one learning activity each day where the kids are up and moving while learning. One of the easiest ways I’ve done this is by using the stairs. We’ve practiced spelling words on them (one letter per step), math facts, and this week we used them for sight word practice at home.
To play our game, I pulled out one of the packs of sight word strips I found at the dollar store.
I placed one word on each step.
Starting at the bottom of the stairs, she read each word.
If she read the word correctly, she got to move up one step.
If she misread the word she had to go all the way back to the bottom and start again.
The goal was to read to the top — getting every word correct and reaching the top step.
Sounding out the words she didn’t know, she made it to the very top on the first try, and was super proud of herself!
This simple sight word practice at home has quickly become a favorite here when working on early reading skills.
