I discovered something last night, at about 2:00 a.m. (okay, so it was actually this morning…), now that I am a mother of 2 small children, I am scared of storms.
I never had a real fear of them before, even after growing up in a family where we spent many a night sleeping in the basement “just in case”. And I’ve survived many adult years out of my parents’ home with out rushing to sleep in the basement or even checking for tornado warnings on the television. But last night, as the wind howled outside louder than I remember hearing it in a long time, I found myself racing to the t.v. for the second night in a row. I channel surfed, checking each channel our little converter box brings us, making sure there were no tornado warnings to be aware of, no reason to wake my sleepy babies and take them into the cold basement for shelter.
Even after finding out that we were only under a “wind advisory”, I still found myself lying awake in my bed, unable to sleep. Which child do I grab first? After all, Monkey can’t get out of his crib on his own (I never had that luck with his sister), and Peanut, even if I told her to get up, would be too asleep to safely make it down our slippery wood steps.
So after 2 nights of lying awake, worrying about the storms and how to protect my precious babies, I am thankful that SUPPOSEDLY the last of our rain will be later this evening and there is no rain in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. Mommy needs some rest!
Okay, so my husband was laughing a little about this. So I need to ask, am I the only one?
What are you thankful for this Thursday?

Maybe you could grab one baby and your husband can grab the other?

Of course, in reality, that would be the course of action. But at 2 a.m., lying awake with my husband sleeping at my side, the logic of having 2 parents and 2 kids to grab didn’t quite compute.

When my children were young I went through pretty much the same thing. I was never afraid of storms before I had them but when they were babies my protective instincts were very strong. The good news is that as they got older it went away and I no longer worry about it unless the grandkids are in the house:) Actually now that the grandkids are older it isn’t as much of an issue as when they were babies either:)

Good to know – I was thinking as they got older and were able to get out of their rooms it would ease up; those protective instincts are hard to reign in in the middle of the night!

Hi, popping in from Mom Loop Friday! I am more afraid of storms now that they seem to be causing so much damage. We have a lot of trees by our house and I’m always worried about them falling on the house! My heart goes out to the people in Alabama and states impacted by these horrible tornadoes.

Yes, the devastation has been overwhelming. It is always hard to see people suffering and feel you can’t do much about it.
Thanks for stopping by my site; I’ll be at yours soon!

I’m with you! I’ve never worried about the storms coming though. I just went to bed and slept right through them. Now, however, after watching all the devastation from these tornadoes and knowing people whose houses are destroyed… I want a storm shelter!
