Banging and Clanging and #Learning Together

November 22, 2011 by OneMommy

Today I’m thankful for time playing with kids. (30 Days of Thanks)

*****

If you haven’t already found and fallen in love with the blog Hands on as We Grow, then do yourself a favor and check out this awesome site!  You will find tons of fun craft and learning activities for you and your child to do together.  This month I’ve really enjoyed reading and doing some of the Hands on Play Challenge.

Last night the kids and I got busy investigating sound.  It all started when my preschooler started digging out the pots and pans and lining them up.  Since my husband was making his special Clam Chowder, I decided it was a good time to experiment with sound.

teaching about sound
My future drum star!

We talked about which objects made the loudest bangs – the metal spoon, the rubber spatula, or the plastic spoon?   (Definitely metal! Wow, was that loud in the hands of my toddler!)  We also talked a little about why that was the case.

toddler experiment
He loved the loud sounds the best!

Then we tried flipping pots in different directions, and I got brave enough to hold a couple lids up as cymbals…

Very noisy, but lots of fun!

Fun was had by all~

What fun (and maybe loud) investigations have you done with your kids lately?

Thank you for introducing me to Hands on as We Grow, what a great site. It sounds (pun intended) like you and the kiddos had a wonderful time investigating sound. I hope you hubby survived the jam session.
We recently investigated condensation. The front door was left opened and condensation formed on the storm door. The kiddos enjoyed making pictures and feeling the condensation. My toddler even started to lick the window. It was fun and it sparked their interest, many questions followed.

I love that your toddler started licking the window! 🙂
Thankfully the husband didn’t seem to mind the noise while he cooked… And it was fun banging around with the kids!

I wouldn’t have thought of it until my daughter started pulling out all the pots and pans while her daddy was cooking. It just sort of happened, which was the best part!
