Child-Made Heart Butterfly Valentines

February 6, 2016 by OneMommy

When it comes to Valentine’s Day crafts for kids, we love making homemade Valentines!

Every year we have a Valentine’s Day party with our little homeschool group.  The kids have fun creating crazy Valentine boxes and stuffing them full of homemade cards.

This year my daughter created these adorable homemade butterfly Valentines to pass out.

Last year we made Straw Rocket Valentines (they really fly!) and Silly Heart Valentines.  Both were big hits with the kids at the party.

This year my daughter picked out cute holiday-themed pencils to give with her Valentines.   I was so proud of what she decided to do with those pencils, I just had to share.

Materials Needed:

  • Construction Paper
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Valentine-Themed Pencils
  • Heart-Shaped Stickers
  • Edging Scissors (optional)
  • Clear Tape

If your child is planning to make several of this butterfly Valentine craft, it will speed up the process to have a stack of colorful paper hearts already cut out.

They may want to use some “fancy scissors” (edging scissors for scrap booking) to cut out the hearts, or they could use standard scissors.

Place 2 sheets of paper together before folding to cut out the hearts.  This will ensure that there are 2 matching wings for each butterfly valentine.

Once all the hearts are cut out, attach a matching pair to the pencil using a piece of clear tape.

Decorate the front of the wings with heart stickers.

Let your child get creative with their butterfly Valentines!

Maybe they want to have just one heart on each wing; maybe they want a dozen.

Once the wings are finished, twist half a pipe cleaner around the top of the pencil to form the antennae.  You may want to use a small piece of clear tape to keep the pipe cleaner in place.

Write your Valentine’s Day message on the back of the hearts.

You may want to try one of these ideas:

  • “You make my heart flutter.”
  • “Our friendship makes me soar.”
  • “You’re all write, Valentine.”

What a cute idea! These would be a great OT activity. My students would love to make them, and then they would love to give them as Valentines! Can’t wait to make these!
