Cleaning out the Closet

March 9, 2013 by OneMommy

The 7 inches of snow that fell this past Wednesday was gone by Friday.  And as much as I like snow, I am definitely ready for spring!  Time to open up those windows, air out the house, and get some serious decluttering going on!

Are you with me?

Please say yes, because I’m actually asking for your help with this first round.

It’s my closet.

Several times a year I go through and try to get rid of things.  But, honestly, there are items that linger in those back corners that haven’t seen the light of day for a loooooong time that i just can’t seem to get rid of.

Some of them are things I wore back in my days in the classroom, and I keep them in case I go back to teaching one day.  (Hey, I don’t want to have to spend a bunch of money on a whole new wardrobe just for work!)

Here are a few pieces that I pull out every time I go through the closet, and they still linger…  I’m asking you to help me decide, do they stay or do they go?

Ready????

Our first contestant is this floral dress with one of those Mandarin collars.  It used to have these huge shoulder pads (if that tells you anything) that I cut out of it.

The next two are denim dresses.

What you don’t see is the 5 year-old hiding behind me, ready to jump out.

getting rid of old clothes

I have quite a few long skirts and dress pants…probably half of them need to go.  But here’s one skirt that keeps sticking around for some reason…. It is red and blue plaid with a super high waist and I’ve had it since high school.  (Did I mention I have the top that goes to it somewhere still?)donating clothesFinally there are the suit jackets.

Yes, suit jackets.

When I decided I was going to teach, my mom went crazy and bought half a dozen different suit jackets for me.  I guess she thought they’d make me look more mature.  One of them was blue velvet.  Yes, you read that right.  I passed that along the last time I cleaned out the closet.  We’re down to just these two…

organizing closet
Yes, that is the tag still on the blue one. The red one is wool.

Okay, so there you have it.

Do I keep any of it?  Or does it all get donated somewhere?

I totally owned the same denim jumper dress back in the day! And I was convinced it was super cute!

Too funny! When I put it on I was thinking it is almost short enough for my 5 year-old to wear… Even she said it looked short!

Oh this is soooo hard!!! I like to think all of those can be used somehow someday!! i am the WRONG person to say…either way. I have quite a few of those items buried in my closet too!! They all fit so nicely still…lucky you for that!!! 🙂

That does make it harder, when they still fit. 🙂

LOL — Oh, you are so right! I forgot the skirt was from high school until I was writing the post…. Wow, that was from the 90’s! And, yes, a different century! 🙂

Honestly I’d donate all but maybe the skirt 🙂 Especially if you have no immediate plans to wear them. But this is coming from someone that holds on to clothes I KNOW I’ll never fit into/wear again, so I totally get where you are coming from!

It seems the general consensus is to donate ’em! I just needed that little push to follow through this time!

I say get rid of it all.:-) Heres why.
I am about to do the same thing again for the second time in 6 months. I have items that keep lingering but I never use! So I have made up my mind to get rid of. Its going to hurt but I gotta do it! Some one else could use it. Its just taking up space and I want to simplify my life and keep only the best & fav clothes I will ware!

Oh, I know! I have set the same stuff aside numerous times…. I need to look through the 20+ pair of pants, too, that never get worn lately. If I ever go back to teaching it will be nice to have some of them, but I am sure some of the pants will need to go.

I say donate them all except for the first, short denim dress. Then wear it this summer with some cute sandals!

Donating them seems to be the verdict. The short denim dress IS kind of cute…and I don’t have many summer dresses. I might just do that — and actually wear it!

I saw those pictures and I thought, she has GOT to be a teacher… those are old teacher clothes! LOL!
