How to Recycle an Old Tire into a Fun DIY Wreath

December 3, 2016 by OneMommy

December means seeing colorful lights decorating trees and and porches as we drive home in the evenings.

In the past I’ve decorated a small shrub in the flower bed.  Unfortunately the shrub had to be torn out this summer, leaving the kids sad that we wouldn’t get to decorate it this year.

As I was putting the empty flower pots away in the barn, I stumbled upon my husband’s old motorcycle tires, and this easy recycled tire wreath idea was formed.

If you have an old tire handy, it makes a fun kids Christmas craft idea for tweens or teens.

Simple Recycled Tire Wreath -- DIY camouflage Christmas wreath

This super easy recycled tire wreath can be made with any size tire.

Use a large tractor tire to create a one of a kind display for the yard.  A bicycle tire would be the perfect size for hanging on a front door.  I used an old motorcycle tire for ours.

For younger kids check out these fun paper plate Christmas wreath ideas.

Materials Needed:

  • Old Tire
  • Camouflage Spray Paint
  • String of Christmas Lights
  • Red Bow

Start by cleaning your tire and letting it dry thoroughly.

Once it is dry, spray a base coat of army green on one side of the tire and the edges.

Let it dry 15-20 minutes and then spray the other side.

If desired, spray a second coat on each side and the edges.

Once the green paint is dry, use khaki and brown spray paint to create splotches of color all around the tire.

Let the paint dry completely.

Then secure a large red bow to the top and wind a string of Christmas lights around it. If you plan to use your wreath outside, be sure to use outdoor lights.

The size of your tire will determine the length of Christmas lights you need.  I used a string of 60 lights on a motorcycle tire.

Want to spice up your recycled tire wreath a little more?  You could also add pinecones, evergreen boughs, or other natural decorations to go with the camouflage theme.  (My husband liked it best super simple.)
