Everywhere you look today, people are interacting with each other on social media. As a blogger, my kids see me using it daily. And, although they are still young right now, I know at some point they are going to want to see what it’s all about. Don’t get me wrong, social networking can be great (like people working together for a cause), but as a parent, I know there are some not so nice things that can happen in the land of social media as well.
That’s why I was excited to learn about a new social networking site, appropriate for children and their families.
(This is a sponsored post written on behalf of HiFiKiddo. All opinions are 100% my own.)
So how is HiFiKiddo different than the social media that’s already out there?
Unlike other social media networks, HiFiKiddo strictly adheres to the Federal Trade Commissions Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). That means a working email address of a parent, and verifiable consent are required before a child under the age of 13 may join the site. This social network was designed especially for kids under the age of 13 so they can connect with family members in a child-friendly way.
HiFiKiddo is like a “social network on training wheels.”
For one thing, parents must approve all friend requests on HiFiKiddo!
And with three predefined sharing circles: Core Family, Family, and Friends, a parent can select the privacy level for each circle. This means you can set it so your child can share pictures with family members that are living in a different state, but ensure that they can only share written messages with friends. (This is something I really like! All too often tweens send out the wrong types of pics to friends.)
And while parents can see what a child shares in the family circle, they can’t see posts shared in the friend’s circle, still allowing the child some privacy. (Although as a parent you can change the type of content shared there at any time. For instance, you can make sure they can’t share pictures or video in their friend’s circle.)
Of course nothing beats parental oversight when it comes to the Internet. But with HiFiKiddo, children can begin to learn the do’s and don’ts of social networking in a much safer environment.
