It was a rough day on the ol’ mommy-ego.
We were playing store today. My little girl was running the cash register and I played the part of various shoppers.
At one point she said, “Now pretend to be a beautiful woman, Mommy.”
I laughed and said, “Oh, I have to pretend to be beautiful?”
“Yes, Mommy, you’ll have to pretend to be beautiful.”
(Really, she said I have to pretend? I mean, look how great I looked after my trip to their beauty shop this summer!)
The sting of that was just going away as we started getting ready for bed. After reading one book together, my husband took our daughter and I took our son to read their second book and sing lullabies.
That’s when my son, who has always been momma’s boy, told me, “Don’t want Mommy! Bad Mommy!”

Don’t worry. My lovely 2 year old has started calling everyone stupid and stinky. “Mommy has stinkyyyyyyyyyyyyyy feet” : ) Lovely…

Don’t you just love kids?

oh you sweet thing! I’m so sorry your daughter hurt your feelings.
OneMommy says
Really, she cracks me up, even then because she doesn’t know how it sounded. 🙂

Oh, I’d be sobbing at that one! Heck, I cried when mine didn’t want me to rock him for a couple days in a row. Kids growing up is tough for us mommies!

Ages and stages. Sometimes the just stomp on our hearts and egos, no?
OneMommy says
Yes, I’m sure it won’t be the last time! At least she didn’t mean it to sound the way it did…. I think.

Oh no! I am sure it was just a harmless thing that she didn’t really think through! Kids do that. My kids are both and school so now my oldest occasionally thinks it’s cool to pick on me in front of friends. The one time she told her friend “Look Mom has a belly and looks like she is getting fat.” Ummm really?? I had to laugh because she didn’t mean to be mean, just trying to be funny I guess 🙂
OneMommy says
Oh, I know neither of them meant to hurt my feelings. Mostly I thought it was funny that she didn’t understand that what she said could be taken that way.

Oh that is just AWFUL!!! I have been there more times than I can count! I remember writing this post about my son…I think it might help you feel better!!

After reading your story I don’t know whether to laugh or just commiserate with you. At least your daughter was sticking up for you!
Donna DM Yates says
Nothing like a child’s honesty to bring a mommy down. Yet, you know they love you with all their hearts. And you are beautiful to them. It’s just what TVs and movies portray women as. So unreal, and so unfair to women.
KyFireWife says
Oh, those moments are humbling, aren’t they? My little one had plenty of these unintentional zingers aimed at me this weekend :/ so the feeling is all to (recently) familiar.
