How to Make Colorful String Eggs

March 31, 2015 by OneMommy

Do you remember your elementary school art class?  Painting, getting your hands in clay…so many fun art projects.

This week we tried a string craft I remember doing in elementary school art class, many, many years ago.

We made colorful string eggs.  The colorful eggs area a perfect DIY Easter decoration.

Materials needed:

  • Embroidery Floss (Pastel colors like this pack would be so pretty!)
  • Small Balloons
  • Liquid Glue
  • Wax Paper or Empty Egg Carton

We actually tried this a couple different ways before we were successful.

At first we used bigger balloons (thinking we’d get some huge Easter eggs) and fuzzy yarn.  But, the yarn just kept getting away from us.

We also tried mixing the glue with water at first (I swear that’s what we did in elementary school), but the glue just would not hold the string to the balloon this way.

How to Make String Easter Eggs

Pour the glue into a wide, shallow dish.

Blow up the balloons you plan to use.

Cut several lengths of embroidery string ahead of time.  (Enough to go around the balloon 4-5 times at least, but not too long so the kids don’t get tangled up while crafting.)

Now, take your piece of string and place it into the glue.  Make sure it gets coated completely.

Wrap the string around your balloon several times.  (We found keeping the first couple times around the balloon close together helped it not slide off as easily.)

When you finish with one piece of string, start over with a new piece, making sure your strings overlap.

Once your balloon is covered in string, place it on the empty egg carton (or a piece of wax paper) and let it dry completely.  (We let ours dry overnight, but for some little ones who really get into the glue, it may need to dry longer.)

Now comes the fun part!  Using a straight pin, or needle, pop the balloon!

Remove any balloon pieces from inside your colorful egg and enjoy your creation.

Place the string eggs in a basket for a lovely Easter centerpiece.  You could also tie a piece of string to your egg and hang it up.
