Venison Chili Recipe

January 3, 2012 by OneMommy

My husband was fortunate enough to get a deer this past hunting season, providing us with a healthy and very inexpensive alternative meat for the upcoming year.

The big question when he brought it back from being processed was, “Would the kids eat it?”  I wasn’t really worried about our daughter – she is a meat eater.  But my son, that is another story.

I needn’t have worried, this venison chili recipe soon was his favorite meal.

Venison chili recipe

Whether your family hunts or you purchase venison at the grocery store, this chili recipe is perfect for cold winter days.  The recipe below serves 6.  I usually double it so we have some for the next day, too.

Venison Chili Recipe

  • 1 pound ground venison
  • 2 qt. jar of homemade salsa (Don’t have salsa?  Substitute: 1 can tomatoes, 1 chopped onion, and 1 chopped green pepper.)
  • 1 can kidney beans, undrained
  • 1 can pinto beans, undrained
  • 1 Tablespoon parsley flakes
  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

In Dutch oven, brown venison over medium heat, stirring occasionally.  Remove from heat and set aside.

Add salsa and heat to boiling.  (If using tomatoes, onions, and green peppers, saute the onions and green peppers in a bit of oil first.

Reduce heat; cover.  Simmer 1 hour to blend flavors.

Stir in beans.   Cook, uncovered, 30 minutes longer.  (Or at least until beans are heated.)

Serve with cheese and crackers or homemade cornbread.  Delicious!

This venison chili recipe has become a favorite winter dinner in our home.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I’ve lived in the south for 25 years, we have deer on our land and even upon occasion let friends hunt during season, but I’ve never tried it. I have to admit you make it look really good!

I hadn’t tried it unitl a few years ago when a neighbor gave us some. This is my husband’s first deer – after years of hunting. I have to say, it’s worth it!

My husband and I love venison. He doesn’t hunt be we have a friend that does. So, since my husband fishes…they trade. We made venison burgers with a soft slice of pear and blue cheese and they were so good that I ate two! I never eat two burgers! You should try it sometime!

I never thought of putting a pear on a burger! I may have to try that…. I love the burger at Red Robin with pineapple on it… Yum!
It’s great that you are able to trade – a good deal all around. This was my husband’s first deer, and so far, so worth it!

This was the first time either of my kids ate chili. I was seriously in shock. The daughter had second helpings even!
I might have to try it in shepherds pie some time….
