How to Make Your Own Felt Board

January 21, 2012 by OneMommy

My kids love the felt board in the children’s section at the library.  Every time we go they use the pieces to act out favorite fairy tales and create their own stories.  These simple DIY Felt Boards have become huge hits around here.

make your own felt board/flannel board -- great for quiet time!

Materials Needed for DIY Felt Board:

  • Picture Frame (Use an old frame you already have or check out your local dollar store.)
  • Large Piece of Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

Start by taking apart the old frame.  Ours had a plastic cover.  If yours has a glass cover be sure to take the necessary precautions to dispose of it properly.

Cut the piece of felt to be 1 inch larger on all sides than the frame’s cardboard insert.  Then cut out square notches on each corner.  (See picture below.)

After cutting the felt accordingly, use the hot glue gun to fold and glue the felt to the frame’s cardboard piece.

Once the glue is set, put the cardboard back into the frame, using the frame’s clips to hold it in place.

I had 2 identical frames, so I made a second board so each of my little ones has their own felt board.  They love to retell fairy tales using the pieces I made from scrap felt we had.

Felt boards are great for quiet time.   And since these are portable they can go in the car for long trips.

You can create your own felt pieces to go with the board, like we did, or purchase one of these great sets!

So there you have it, and quick and easy felt board to entertain little ones for hours!

Thanks. I was trying to make sure they’d last with my little boy…lol. And, like I said, I just stumbled upon these frames in the basement – ones someone gave me that were pretty cheap.

It was really easy, too, which I love. 🙂 My little one asks for the felt board every day near quiet time.

My 3-year old son got a Thomas the Train felt board for Christmas. One day, as I was cooking, he colored with black crayon on it. I have tried to clean it with a baby wipe, but I am afraid to use anything harsher in case in makes it worse. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm…. I haven’t had to deal with that one yet – usually the crayon is on something where I can use the Magic Eraser on it. I wonder if that would work on felt??
