My Kingdom for a Shower

March 7, 2011 by OneMommy

Another Manic Monday.….

A shower.  It sounds simple enough, but if you are a mother of young children, you know what a rare treat this can be in the morning.   My daughter is three, and she can open the refrigerator door.  See where this is going?

Take for instance what happened a couple months ago.  I stepped out of the shower, threw on my pants and grabbed my top as I went to leave my bedroom to check on the kids.  This is what I heard, “No, not like that, you do it like this…” Crack!

When I was able to see into the kitchen I was greeted by this scene:  The dog was gobbling grapes as fast as she could from the bowl that was sitting on the floor.  My son had an egg in his hand, my daughter had another in hers, ready to crack it on the floor, and the rest of the dozen was smeared across the floor.  A variety of other refrigerator items were scattered about.  Yep, that’s why Mommy tends to take her showers at night after the kids are in bed.

I had a little talk with my daughter about how she is only allowed to get sippy cups out of the refrigerator.  She helped me clean up the egg mess, and I said a little prayer about the fact that at least the dog was eating the potential chocking hazards (grapes) instead of my 1 ½ year old, who tends to cram everything into his mouth.

And the next time I took a morning shower I came up with a plan.  When I want to jusmp in the shower for 5-10 minutes I turn on Sesame Street, give the kids sippy cups of water and Cheerios or thin cut apple slices for a snack, lock all the exterior doors and basement door, and put the dog in my bedroom.  This usually works.  Usually.
