It starts out with a couple innocent bow clips for their little baby hair, then a few tangle-free mini rubber bands for those tiny little pony tails.
And the next thing you know you can’t close the medicine cabinet because headbands and barrettes keep tumbling out faster than you can shut the door!
Until recently we had hair twisters in baggies in the medicine cabinet, headbands in the dress-up drawer of my daughter’s room, and barrettes probably in every room of the house. I really wanted to have all the supplies in one convenient place. I tried using some little storage containers to put them in the medicine cabinet, but the headbands did not want to cooperate, and the rest of it just took up too much room.
There’s a simple recycled craft that is the perfect solution!
Make this DIY Hair Supplies Organizer and contain the hair accessory clutter.
DIY Hair Supplies Organizer
- large, clean food canister (We used a large cocoa can, but an oatmeal container will also work.)
- Colorful Scrapbook Paper
- Hot Glue Gun
A large cocoa can, or even a large oatmeal canister, is just the right size for sticking headbands around. The inside is perfect for holding hairbrushes and twist ties or barrettes.
The first step is to cover your container with some pretty paper.
Measure the container carefully. Cut your paper so the ends will overlap just a bit. Use the hot glue gun to secure it in place.
When you are finished, stick all those pretty headbands around the outside.
Fill the canister with hairbrushes, combs, and the numerous hair ties that always seem to disappear.
That’s it! You’ve got a totally simple and affordable way to contain the clutter of hair accessories.
And the best part of this DIY hair supplies organizer?
No more twist ties and headbands falling out of the medicine cabinet every time the door is opened.

What a great way to recycle! I love the color of the can!
I am on this! Love it!! I can have each of my girls create their own for the counter in their bathroom.
Thanks so much for sharing this idea. Maybe now I can wrangle in the mess of hair supplies!
Yours are even old enough to help plan the paper and decorate the cans! 🙂
Such a cute idea!! Stopping by from SITS! Have a wonderful day!
Thanks! And thanks for stopping in from SITS — off to check our your latest!

They could each have their own! 🙂
Yes, when I had longer hair I had tons of hair stuff that I’m sure was probably everywhere…

What a GREAT idea!! My girls hair stuff is piling up over here!!! I just have a big basket and another bigger basket to hole the mess in… this is just lovely! SO creative. 🙂
Isn’t it funny how the hair stuff just seems to multiply on its own? I couldn’t believe how many items we got at Christmas time to add to her collection!

Great idea. I love getting and being organized!
Now if I could just get the rest of the house organized…. LOL.
What a cute idea! I have 2 daughters and really need to do this (and I just realized I threw away the perfect can for it!). The two drawers in their bathroom are full of hairbands, clips, etc.!!!
I thought about using the drawer in the kids’ bathroom, but it is currently filled with books for the little boy to read while he is “deep in thought”… 🙂 I’m sure another can will come your way!
I almost couldn’t do the math problem. 🙂 Just kidding. This is so smart. My 8 year old has hair stuff EVERYWHERE. Thanks for sharing. I’d love you to link it up on my Moments of Genius linkup!
That math spam plug-in gets more comments! 🙂 Just haven’t found one I like better…
I’d love to link up! Off I go!

Great idea and a great way to recycle. I just reorganized my girls’ hair clips this week as well … we’re trying a color coded system now!
I love trying to find a new purpose for things. Can’t wait to check out your idea!
Great way to recycle! Love the idea! I actually bought an inexpensive glass container that you might put a candle or other decorative things in at HomeGoods and that’s what my daughter uses for some of her stuff. She also decorated an ice tea tin and used that for her hairbands. Visiting from the Lets Get Organized Blog Hop!
They take such pride in it when they get to decorate it! 🙂
She loves her headband holder!
