#Potty Training in Cloth Training Pants

September 26, 2011 by OneMommy

Last Friday I told you we were going with cloth training pants this weekend.  I’m sure you’ve all been anxiously waiting to hear the results.  Right?

No?  Really?

Well, I’m going to share anyway, because this OneMommy is a proud Mommy!

In preparation for the possible flooding, I covered the living room play area floor with blankets and put waterproof crib sheets on the couches.  (Pee is a lot harder to get out of a couch cushion than off the carpet, the dog has taught me that one.)

The dog loves the new look -

On Saturday morning, after his first potty trip, I told him he was going to wear his cloth big boy underwear.  He kept trying to get his pull-ups out instead, but eventually we got his cloth training pants on.  Mommy told him a zillion times not to pee-pee in them or poopie because the carpet would get all wet and dirty.

He isn’t at the point where he tells us he has to go, yet.  So we made sure (I should say, Mommy made sure) he went every hour and 15 minutes.  (I’m going to make that time longer as we go, but I figured some immediate success couldn’t hurt.)

He only had 2 accidents that day, one was right before bedtime, when we let him go a little longer because we were outside and it was just about time to go in and get teeth brushed and jammies on.  Not bad for a first day!

Sunday was day 2, and again Mommy reminded him over and over to keep his cloth pants dry.  Again, we only had 2 accidents.  I put him on the potty after each one, and the second time he poopied on the potty.  (Always a victory!)  I was super glad for that, because he hadn’t gone the day before, which is not his norm, and I didn’t want him to have tummy problems.  I also didn’t want to have to clean poop out of cloth training pants…

We’re staying home today, too, for day 3.  I’m hoping for continued success, and continued patience.

And those potty treatsI mentioned last time?  He loves them!  He runs around in a circle, holding his Veggie Tale gummy high in the air and belting out the Veggie Tale theme song as loud as his little lungs can sing.  (He shares one with his sister, too, so the whole family is cheering Monkey on in his potty training adventure.)

Running in circles in full "potty treat" excitement -

I’ll keep you posted as our potty training adventure unfolds.

Any tips you want to share?

Oh – and today is the last day to enter the hand sanitizer giveaway!  Good luck!

It’s an adjustment, but it does seem like sometimes you have to hunker down and go cloth. They don’t seem to mind accidents as much in pull-ups. Congrats on the initial success!

Yes, although using the Pull-ups at the beginning is a plus just b/c there is less mess when you are just trying to teach them the basics. Being able to just pull them down was a lot easier than undoing diapers every time, too.

Good luck! I am having no luck with my son. He’s used to cloth diapers and used to that wet feeling and its been quite a fiasco. It doesn’t help that my husband doesn’t positivly motivate him to use the potty, instead he tells J he is a bad boy for going in his diaper. I keep telling Hunky Hubs that he needs positive re-enforcement, not negative. He tells us when he needs a diaper change he tells us when he needs to poo, but he will sit there on the potty reading books for up to a half hour, refuse to actually go in the potty and then when we put him in his diaper he immediately goes. So I’m not sure what the issue is. He’s not apposed to sitting on the potty, just apposed to actually putting pee or poo in the potty.

Definitely agree positive reinforcement is the way to go. With our first child I made the mistake of getting upset when she had accidents after we’d been training a while. I really think it held her back and made the whole process take longer. I am REALLY trying to have more patience this time around! In fact, it’s kind of crazy to the extent of I have a silly song I sing when he uses the potty, and of course the treats now IF he is dry.
      Good luck!

My children two daughters were cloth diapered so changing to cloth big girl panties wasn’t a question. I just had to find the one thing that would make her want to go to the potty instead of in her pants. Luckily for me it only took two days til my baby girl was potty trained on day four she was going poop. All it took was an iPad! I told her she couldn’t play on my iPad unless she was going potty. Funny how that’s all that it took! 🙂

Every kid is different – Love that she was so motivated. My little girl wanted these princess dolls her friend had; I just had to tell her she could have one if she pooped on the potty and that was it!
It’s the staying dry thing that is the issue with my little guy… I’m hoping his train car is a good motivator to keep trying to stay dry!
