Sensory Play: Rainbow Cream Pie

July 23, 2013 by OneMommy

We’ve been having lots of fun with our water beads since our first water bead exploration.  We’ve played with them in water and out, and with mermaids, pirates, and various animals.

I have been looking forward to mixing it up a bit, so to speak.

I gathered up a few materials:  large tub for sensory play, play dishes, can of shaving cream, and, of course, the water beads.

Doesn’t my invitation to play look scrumptious?

No explanation was necessary; they couldn’t wait to get their hands in it!

They dished up numerous cream pies, complete with brightly colored “berries,” and “candies.”  They played for almost an hour.  (I have to say, I made a few pies myself.  The shaving cream gave the water beads a whole different feel!)

“Want some, Mommy?”

At one point some of the water we had for rinsing off dishes got added to our sensory bin.  It definitely didn’t slow down my chefs — they just added some fancy drinks to the menu.toddler sensory play

And the best part was clean up was a breeze!

I hosed off their arms, the back porch, and all the dishes.  Then I poured the watery shaving cream and water beads into a strainer and rinsed away the shaving cream, leaving our water beads clean and ready for another day.

One time we put shaving cream on the children’s faces and used a popsicle stick to pretend to shave it off. It was cute. Shaving cream has a great consistency for playing.

I love the idea of giving the “much” a name! It gives it purpose, even though we know the purpose is in the play…it helps them to stay focused. Great idea!
