Sight Word Bang!

May 26, 2014 by OneMommy

Over the summer I am hoping to really work on those early reading skills with the kids.  Sight word practice at home is so important!  And since it’s summer, I’ve got all kinds of outdoor ideas popping to mind!   This weekend the ideas were popping in the literal sense — with the help of Pop-Its (Also called snap-pops and snap caps).

sight word practice at home -- use those leftover Pop-Its in this fun sight word activity

This is a sight word game that really gets the kids moving!

Directions for Sight Word Bang!

Use sidewalk chalk to write a variety of sight words on the driveway.  (You can even  have the kids help write them!)

When you call out a sight word, your little reader needs to find it and stand on it.  If they’re right, they get a Pop-It to throw on the ground.

Bang!

If they go to the wrong word, offer them clues to help them try again.

Even my preschooler got a bang out of this one!  Since most of the words were unfamiliar to him, I either told him the first letter of the word or spelled it for him to find.  sight word practice at home

Cute idea! I used to play Sight Word Bang with the kids in my classroom, but my version used popsicle sticks, not snap caps! This is a great twist for home!

When I was a kid, a boy in my class got in trouble for popping a snap cap with the lid of his desk at school. Not a good idea!

Yes, this is definitely not something you could do in the classroom. Love the idea of popsicle sticks for there!

For me this is ;learning at its best, especially for younger children less willing to sit at a desk

What a great game! I love pop-its as a kid, although I can’t remember if they were called that then!

My friend handed me two boxes of pop-its as we left her 4th of July party, and I stuck them in a high cupboard without telling the kids. Now I know what I was keeping them for! Thanks!
