This simple flower petal suncatcher is fun for kids of all ages, from toddlers to elementary school.

Enjoy it at home or try it as a camp craft with scouts.

Flower Petal Suncatcher Craft

Materials Needed (affiliate links provided):

• Fresh Flowers
• Construction Paper
• Press ‘n Seal Plastic Wrap or Clear Contact Paper
• Paper Plate
• Pencil
• Scissors

If you have access to wildflowers and/or flowers in your flowerbed, let your children pick some before starting this craft.  Impatiens, petunias, geraniums, roses, and daisies are perfect for this flower craft.  (Pick a few extra and try painting with flowers, too!)

If fresh flowers aren’t available, you can also purchase inexpensive flowers at most grocery stores, such as carnations, which come in a variety of colors.      

Once you have a selection of flowers, have your child pull off the petals.  This is great for working on fine motor skills and developing the proprioception sense, which tells us how much force we need to do certain activities.

Working with several children?  You may want to put all the petals on paper plates for easy sharing.

Once your flower petals are ready, have your child use a round lid or plate to trace a circle onto a piece of construction paper.

Cut out the circle, and then gently fold the paper in half to cut out a circle inside, leaving a 1/2 inch thick ring of colored paper to make your suncatcher with.  An adult may need to help younger children with this step.

(Alternatively, you can cut the center out of a circle plate and make the suncatcher using paper plates.  We liked the variety of colors using construction paper gave us.)

Cut a piece of Press ‘n Seal plastic wrap that is a bit larger than your paper circle, and place it sticky side up.  (If you are using clear contact paper, peel off the paper and place it sticky side up.)

Press the paper circle to the center.

Arrange your flower petals inside the circle.  

Allow your child to place them any way they’d like, but make sure they are laid fairly flat.  (One benefit of using the plastic wrap is that it is easier to move petals around.)

Once your child is finished, cut another piece of plastic wrap to cover the other side of the suncatcher.

Press the plastic wrap together and rub it to make sure it seals.

Use scissors to trim off the excess.

Use a small piece of clear tape to hang it in a sunny window and enjoy!

Your child may choose to create a pattern with the flower petals.  

They can also create pictures with them like we did with our leaf creatures craft.

Whatever they choose, they will wind up with a beautiful flower petal suncatcher they will be proud to display.

A lot of times I will walk into the kitchen and find mine surrounded by pipe cleaners, glue sticks, colored paper bits, and pom-poms as they use their imaginations.  

Open-ended craft time like that is important.

But my kids also love it when I suggest a kids craft.

So when my daughter found the coffee filters and started coloring them, I knew it was the perfect time to make a new coffee filter suncatcher.    She adored this flower suncatcher craft, and I know your kids will, too!

This simple spring craft has become one of our favorite spring rainbow crafts.

Coffee Filter Suncatcher 

Materials Needed:

• Coffee Filters
• Washable Markers
• Squirt Bottle
• Paper Towels
• Black Construction Paper
• Scissors
• Double Sided Tape

To make your own coffee filter sun catcher, use your washable markers to color your coffee filter.   We discovered that wide markers work best.

Also, for the best results you want to make sure there is color on almost the whole filter.

Once the filter is completely colored, place it on several paper towels.  The paper towels will reduce the mess.

Use a squirt bottle to spray the filter.  (My son loves this one that looks like a squirt gun.) Almost immediately you will see the colors start to spread.

Once each filter has been sprayed, allow them to dry completely.

Flower Suncatcher Craft

To make the frame for a flower suncatcher, fold a piece of black construction paper in half.  Cut the shape of half a tulip from the paper.  Be sure your flower shape isn’t bigger than the coffee filters you used!

Then cut the same shape out again, leaving 1/4 inch or so of paper around the edge.

When you unfold the paper you have the outline of a tulip.

Once the coffee filters are dry, use very small pieces of double-sided tape to stick them to your paper tulip shapes.  We tried using glue sticks to do this, but we found the tape worked better.

Use scissors to carefully trip off the excess coffee filter from your tulip craft. 

Then hang them in a sunny window to enjoy.

I think my favorite is this tie-dyed coffee filter suncatcher.  I love the bright splotches of color and how they mix together.

I dried the flowers myself years ago, and its pale flowers sit on a bookshelf in the study.  Each time she picks it up, tiny white baby’s breath falls to the ground.

I knew she would love to have her own colorful bouquet, so I gathered up the materials for a fun kids tissue paper flower craft.

In no time this kids craft had her pretending to toss her own wedding bouquet.

These simple flowers are easy to make and would be perfect to brighten someone’s day.  We are planning to make small bunches as DIY Valentine’s Day gifts.

Tissue Paper Flower Craft

Materials Needed:

• Colored Tissue Paper
• Pipe Cleaners (Chenille Stems)
• Scissors

For each set of flowers you will need 3 sheets of tissue paper.  You can make the flowers all one color, or use 3 different colors to make rainbow flowers like we did.

Lay your 3 sheets of tissue paper on top of each other.

Starting at one of the short sides, fold the paper accordion-style, making each fold approximately an inch (2.5 cm) wide.

Once the paper is folded, wrap 2-3 pipe cleaners around the tissue paper.  These will become your flowers’ stems.

For fuller-looking flowers, use 3 pipe cleaners, cutting the tissue paper into 3 lengths that are approximately 4 inches long, with the pipe cleaner in the middle of each length.  (Tip:  to create flowers with opposite color patterns, twist the pipe cleaners so they are on opposite sides.)

Carefully pull the top sheet of tissue paper up, fluffing it.  Then carefully pull the bottom sheet down and fluff.

The result is a colorful tissue paper flower that will brighten up anyone’s day.

One of my favorite parts of spring is watching the flowers pop up.  I especially love the hints of yellow in the yard, and the dandelion bouquets my youngest brings me.  This week we collected some of those spring flowers and used them to do a little painting with flowers.

Springtime walks are one of our favorite activities.  You can check out all the signs of spring, from birds singing to the colorful flowers popping up.  And, if your child is anything like mine, you will find yourself collecting a few flowers along the way.  Why not use them in this fun process art activity?

Materials Needed:

• Flowers
• Acrylic Paint
• Paper Plate
• Paint Brush (optional)

Start off with a collection of spring flowers….

We tried anemone, dandelions, a branch from the pussy willow bush, and even a couple daffodils.  The dandelions were a huge favorite!  (We soon discovered that we needed more than we originally picked — let your little one go crazy picking flowers!)

To make painting with flowers easier, pour a small amount of paint onto your paper plate.  Your child can dip the flowers in to the paint and make prints.  Dandelions are great for this!

For the more fragile flowers, like the anemone, use a paint brush to apply the paint to the petals.

The pictures they made were beautiful!

Painting with flowers is a wonderful craft to follow up a spring walk with the kids.
