Taking care of plants, like in a mini garden, teaches kids responsibility as well as teaching them about how plants grow.

But when it comes to growing plants, kids can get impatient. 

Growing carrot tops is an easy and fun kids gardening activity that is perfect because it only takes days to see results.

Carrot tops aren’t just an easy plant for young gardeners to grow, their fern-like foliage looks pretty growing in a sunny window.

How to Grow Carrot Tops

Growing a carrot top is super simple.

Start by cutting off the top inch from a carrot.  We saved the top part of ours after cutting carrot sticks for lunch.

Stick 3-4 toothpicks around the top  of the carrot, just at a slight angle.

Use the toothpicks to support the carrot at the top of a clear glass or small jar.

Fill the glass with water so the bottom of the carrot is resting in the water and place it in a sunny window.

The kids will be amazed that in just 2-3 days you will see a small bit of green sprouting from the top.

If your kids are anything like mine they will be excited to check their carrot each day. 

You can turn this into a STEM activity by having your child use a ruler to take measurements and even make a chart to show how much it grows each day.  

After a couple weeks your carrot top will be a beautiful houseplant.   

If you have a preschooler, try growing a Grass Head, too, for some fun scissor practice!

Not only do carrot tops make a fun plant for kids to grow, but they provide an opportunity for kids to explore plant roots.  After all, a carrot is actually an edible taproot.  That is, it’s the main root that grows straight into the ground.

As your carrot start to grow, your child will notice smaller roots growing off of the section of taproot.  These smaller roots help bring water into the plant.

Your carrot top will continue to grow as long as you keep it in water.  It makes a beautiful touch of green during the winter and early spring months.

You can even take your child’s gardening experience further and plant the carrot top in a small flower pot with soil.  While it won’t form a new carrot, the greenery may flower and produce seeds, which you can harvest and plant.

Who knew that a simple kids gardening activity like growing carrot tops could be so fun?

This past week my daughter celebrated her 7th birthday, and like so many girls, she loves the movie Frozen, so she asked to  have a Frozen-themed birthday party.

We made a simple DIY Frozen birthday cake.  This fun and simple Frozen-themed craft: make rock trolls, was a huge hit with all the kids.  It would also be fun just as a garden craft or for anyone that loves Trolls.

Frozen-Themed Craft:  Rock Trolls

This Frozen craft is so much fun, and the rock trolls look cute in the flower bed.

Materials Needed:

• Rocks
• Hot Glue Gun
• Craft Glue
• Wiggly Eyes
• Permanent Markers
• Felt (optional)
• Terrarium Moss

You will need plenty of 3-4 inch tall rocks. Make sure they have a fairly flat bottom to stand on.

Wash the rocks ahead of time and make sure they are dry before making your trolls.

Then let the kids get creative!

Use a hot glue gun to add on fun wiggly eyes.

Permanent markers work great for adding noses, mouths, and other details for this troll craft.

Terrarium Moss makes the perfect hair for rock trolls.  I originally used the hot glue to stick it on, but regular craft glue actually worked better for this.  

If you want to go a bit further, felt can be cut into clothing and glued onto the rocks.

I love how unique each of the rock trolls from our Frozen party turned out.

The kids had fun creating their trolls and couldn’t wait to show off their Frozen craft to their parents at pick-up time.

Plus, it was a little something special to remember the party by — much more fun than just a goodie bag of candy.
