With the global pandemic going on, there are many parents and kids wondering what Halloween will look like this year.

Whether or not trick-or-treating takes place, you can still make the holiday fun this year with a few simple Halloween Party Games for Kids.

Catapulting Pumpkins: Simple & Fun Halloween Activity for Kids

October has flown by. With all the running around that seems to happen when you have kids, it’s easy to lose track of time.

Thankfully there is still time for some fun Halloween STEM Activities.

Making a craft stick pumpkin catapult is fun for kids of all ages. And once it’s made, kids will have fun using it for a Halloween game that will keep them busy and having fun.

Ocotober is perfect for pumpkin STEM activities like this one.

Kids love flinging things. That’s what makes this activity such a huge hit.

Craft Stick Pumpkin Catapult

Materials Needed:

7 Jumbo Craft Sticks
Plastic Bottle Cap
3 Rubberbands
Hot Glue Gun
Candy Pumpkins
Pumpkin Bucket

To make your simple catapult, you will follow the same basic craft stick catapult directions. The only difference is you will use a bottle cap as a basket to hold the candy instead of a plastic spoon. We also used jumbo craft sticks instead of the smaller ones.

Start by stacking 5 craft sticks and securing the ends together with 2 of your rubber bands.

Hot glue your plastic bottle cap to the end of one of the remaining sticks.

Stack the stick with the bottle cap on top of the last craft stick and fasten them together with the last rubber band.

Slide the stack of 5 craft sticks from earlier in between these 2 to make the catapult’s crossbar.

To help hold it all together, and to make it have a bit more “oompf” when you use it, criss-cross the rubber band holding the 2 stacked craft sticks so it goes around the crossbar.

We found that the catapult worked better when we twisted that last rubber band around the end of the sticks extra tight.

Catapulting Pumpkins Halloween STEM Activity

Once you have your catapult ready, it’s time to test it out.

What better target than a smiling pumpkin candy bucket?

Place your bucket on a flat surface in front of your pumpkin catapult.

Load the basket of the catapult with a piece of candy and get ready to play.

To fire the catapult, use one hand to hold the crossbar down against the table. Use your other hand to press the basket of the catapult down, and then let go.

The candy will shoot up into the air.

Can you get the candy to land in the bucket?

Experiment with where you need to place your catapult.

You can also experiment with how the catapult is made. Try adding another craft stick or 2 to the crossbar. Will this make the candy fly further? What if you take away a craft stick?

Try using a different rubber band to hold the catapult together. Or, try moving the crossbar further to the end of the catapult. Does this affect how far your candy goes?

You can turn this STEM activity into a fun DIY Halloween game.

For solo play, start with 10 candy pumpkins and see how many you can get into the bucket. Or, see how many pumpkins you can get into the bucket in 1 minute’s time.

You can also compete with a friend. Who can get the most points for pumpkins in the bucket?

When your child finishes, challenge them to build a toothpick and candy pumpkin tower.

Go on a Candy Ghost Hunt!

“There’s one!” My daughter raced across the yard to pull the little white lollipop ghost from the tree branch.

Before long the kids were laughing and helping each other hunt for ghosts in this super simple Halloween scavenger hunt.

It has quickly become one of our favorite Halloween activities for kids.

This simple scavenger hunt idea for Halloween is a fun kids Halloween party idea. It works well with kids of a variety of ages and groups sizes.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Before you can set up your candy ghost hunt, you will need to make lollipop ghosts. It’s a fun and simple kids Halloween craft that even the youngest kids can participate in.

To make each ghost you will need a 7-8 inch square of white tissue paper. Depending on the thickness of your tissue paper, you may want to double it up so your lollipop wrapper isn’t visible.

Place your lollipop in the center of the square and wrap the tissue paper around it.

Tie a piece of yarn tightly around the bottom of the lollipop to form the ghost’s head.

Then tie the ends of the yarn together, double knotting it to form a loop so you can hang your candy ghost.

Use a black permanent marker to draw eyes and a mouth on each one.

Ghosts Scavenger Hunt

Once you have plenty of candy ghosts made, it’s time to set up your ghost hunt.

Use the yarn loop to hang the ghosts.

If the ghosts are top heavy you can secure the yarn to the back of the ghost’s head with a bit of clear tape to keep the ghosts from tilting.

You can adjust the difficulty level of the Halloween scavenger hunt depending on the ages of your kids. For younger kids put the ghosts at their eye level. For older kids you can put them up higher and spread them out more. (Love it? This winter, try having a Candy Cane Hunt.)

Going on a ghost hunt is a fun outdoor activity for October, perfect for doing in the back yard. It also makes a fun rainy day activity; just set up your Halloween scavenger hunt inside.

Fizzing Halloween Science

I can hardly believe it is halfway through October. It feels like time speeds up when we enter the last few months of the year.

Thankfully there is still plenty of time for some fun Halloween activities with the kids.

This time of year has us running quite a bit, but this Fizzing Eyeballs Halloween science experiment takes just minutes to set up and is perfect to share with the kids when they return home from school or even as a quick party activity.

This is one of our favorite simple Halloween STEM Activities. It’s easy to set up and fun for all ages.

Toddlers and preschoolers will watch with wide eyes as the bubbles and plastic eyeballs ooze over the side of the container. Older kids will giggle and may even want to add their own unique twist to it.

When you finish this experiment, you may want to continue the fun and make your own pumpkin volcano.

Fizzing Eyeballs Halloween Experiment

Materials Needed:

Vinegar
Baking Soda
Orange food Coloring (or color of your choice)
Ping-Pong Ball Eyes
Liquid Dishwasher Soap
Small Container

To make the experiment extra fun, try using a fun container, like this skull mug or a plastic pumpkin bowl.

I highly recommend putting the experiment on a tray with sides to help contain the mess.

Squirt a a few drops of liquid dish soap in the bottom of your container. This will help enhance the amount of fizzing and bubbles you’ll get from the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar.

Add the plastic eye balls and have your child sprinkle baking soda over them. (For younger kids you may want to put a small amount in a separate container and have them use a spoon to add it.)

In a separate container, mix a few drops of orange food coloring with 1/3 cup of vinegar.

Have your child poor the vinegar slowly into the container.

Be ready for plenty of ooh’s and ahhh’s!

Not only is vinegar and baking soda science fun to watch, it is also inviting for small hands to touch and explore.

If your child is anything like mine, they will ask to do the experiment several times. (That’s why, even though my husband laughs, I always buy the gallon-sized bottle of vinegar.)

The Science Behind the Vinegar & Baking Soda Fizzing

As you probably already know, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (diluted acetic acid) produce carbon dioxide gas when mixed together. This gas escapes in the form of bubbles.

Adding a few drops of liquid dish soap doesn’t affect the chemical reaction, but it does make it more foamy and fun to watch.

No matter how many times we do a variation of the baking soda and vinegar experiment, the kids always love it.
