Dr. Seuss books are great for beginning readers. The books grab the attention of kids as they listen, and the non-sense words make them giggle and enjoy reading.

Dr. Seuss crafts & activities are popular every March as schools celebrate his birthday.

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You is full of fun sounds and has been one of our favorite books for a while now. We had lots of fun with the book and these simple Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You activities.

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You is full of sound words that are great for working on phonics skills. Not only that, but kids love to repeat the fun noises.

The phrase “How about you?” is repeated several times in the book. When reading it aloud be sure to pause to give your child time to make each sound.

Once you finish reading the book together, head outdoors for a sound hunt.

Listen. Can you hear a dog barking? Are birds tweeting?

What noises can you hear as cars drive by?

Bring a small dry erase board or a notebook and have your child help sound out the spelling for each noise that you hear.

Then head indoors for this printable activity for Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You.

Print out the activity on thick printer-friendly paper. You may want to laminate it if you plan on using it more than once.

Cut each sheet in half.

Place the cards in a circle. Have your child walk around the circle until you say stop, kind of like a cake walk.

For even more fun you might even want to use Dr. Seuss music, instead.

When they stop, have them read the card and make the sound it is asking for.

I have created two versions of the Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You game.

One set includes just sounds from the book: moo, buzz, klopp klopp, boom, pop, and hoo hoo. This set would be perfect for preschoolers and early kindergartners who are just learning to sound out words using phonics.

The second set includes descriptions of the sounds. This set would be great for kindergartners and first graders to read and then make the sounds described.

For the simple version, print out pages 1-3. Pages 4-6 include the more difficult version. You can choose which one to use. Or, print out both and mix them together to use.

Book Activities for Hop on Pop

Dr. Seuss just never goes out of style!

With his funny rhymes and colorful illustrations, his books are always popular with young readers. Plus, there are also so many fun Dr. Seuss crafts & activities that have been inspired by his books!

I remember reading Hop on Pop when I was little, and I couldn’t wait to share it with my own kids.

After we read it we just had to do some Hop on Pop activities. After all, who can resist having a little fun with a classic Dr. Seuss book?

Preschoolers love these simple activities for Hop on Pop.

Your child will also like making their own paper plate Cat in the Hat and this Dr. Seuss sensory bin idea.

Hop on Pop activities

Since Hop on Pop is full of rhymes, it is perfect for exploring rhyming words with preschoolers and kindergartners.

Make your own sight word tools to help your child work on simple rhyming words.

All you need are a few empty cardboard tubes, permanent marker, and strips of colorful paper. (Paint sample strips are perfect for this!)

Simply wrap the paper strip around one end of the tube and tape the paper together to form a circle that fits snugly around the tube.

On the cardboard tube write the end part of rhyming words, for instance “all.”

Then on the paper strip write the beginning letters for the words. If you use a paint strip like we did, you can write one letter on each colored square of the paint strip. On mine I wrote “T,” “B,”, “C,” and “F.”

By twisting the paper strip you can create words that rhyme (tall, ball, call, fall).

For another simple rhyming activity you will need a pack of rhyming words flash cards.

Pull out several sets of rhyming pairs from your deck and read the cards aloud. Have your child match the rhyming words.

Finally, let the kids have fun with this moving activity for Hop on Pop.

Write the word “pop” on a couple sheets of paper. Then play a little game of “Hop on Pop.”

Ask your child to, “hop, hop on pop.”

Watch the giggles begin as they hop up and down on the word.

Then, tell them to “Stop! You must not hop on pop!”

To give it a little variety (and help work on those listening skills) try a few variations. “Hop on pop with your hands on your head.” “Hop on pop with your hands on your waist.”

You can also try whispering the directions.

We had so much fun with these Hop on Pop activities. In fact, the kids begged to play several times.

Even after all these years, Dr. Seuss really never does go out of style!
