Rainy days and long school breaks have something in common: parents often hear the words, “I’m bored.”

Kids crafts, taking apart electronics and crafting with recyclables are fun activities to suggest if you have the materials needed. But what if you don’t?

Scribble Art for kids is a fun boredom buster that takes no prep work and allows kids to get creative.

I remember doing scribble art in art class when I was in elementary school. It quickly became a fun activity that I did at home when I wanted to get creative but didn’t know what to draw.

Scribble Art

Affiliate links have been provided below; my full disclosure can be found here.

Materials Needed:

White Drawing Paper

Black Permanent Marker

Colored Pencils and/or Thin Tip Markers

Directions:

Have your child use the black permanent marker to draw a wiggly scribble all over the white paper. The only rule is that they may not lift the marker up; it must be one continuous line.

Have them end the design where they began, thus closing up the scribble.

Once they are finished there will be a series of wiggly shapes on the paper.

Challenge them to fill in each of these shapes with a different pattern. No two touching shapes should have the same design.

They can use fine tip markers to make small designs, like dots, hearts, and lines and then color in the rest of the shape with colored pencils.

Or, they may choose to use only colored pencils to create their patterns.

My daughter loves scented markers, but they are usually to big to give much detail to drawings. She fell in love with these scented colored pencils, which made this boredom buster twice the fun.

When the entire scribble is filled in, have your child hang up their artwork.

For a bit of extra pop, you may want to have your child cut out their scribble art and glue it onto black paper like these gorgeous examples of scribble art at Fireflies & Mud Pies.
