Fun Egg Carton Crafts and Activities for Kids

When it comes to doing activities with the kids, using recyclables is a great option.

Not only does it make craft & activity time less expensive, but there are always plenty of materials on hand.

This time of year families tend to have a lot of egg cartons on hand, which is perfect for using in some fabulous Egg Carton Crafts and Egg Carton Activities.

They have become some of our favorite recycled crafts.

Springtime is the time for flowers, more time outdoors, and colorful eggs.

And all those eggs come in cartons, which means you’ll have plenty of containers for some of these creative ideas.

Gorgeous Flower Petal Suncatcher

Spring is the perfect time for getting out in nature and colorful crafts.

This simple flower petal suncatcher is fun for kids of all ages, from toddlers to elementary school.

Enjoy it at home or try it as a camp craft with scouts.

Flower Petal Suncatcher Craft

Materials Needed (affiliate links provided):

Fresh Flowers
Construction Paper
Press ‘n Seal Plastic Wrap or Clear Contact Paper
Paper Plate
Pencil
Scissors

If you have access to wildflowers and/or flowers in your flowerbed, let your children pick some before starting this craft. Impatiens, petunias, geraniums, roses, and daisies are perfect for this flower craft. (Pick a few extra and try painting with flowers, too!)

If fresh flowers aren’t available, you can also purchase inexpensive flowers at most grocery stores, such as carnations, which come in a variety of colors.

Once you have a selection of flowers, have your child pull off the petals. This is great for working on fine motor skills and developing the proprioception sense, which tells us how much force we need to do certain activities.

Working with several children? You may want to put all the petals on paper plates for easy sharing.

Once your flower petals are ready, have your child use a round lid or plate to trace a circle onto a piece of construction paper.

Cut out the circle, and then gently fold the paper in half to cut out a circle inside, leaving a 1/2 inch thick ring of colored paper to make your suncatcher with. An adult may need to help younger children with this step.

(Alternatively, you can cut the center out of a circle plate and make the suncatcher using paper plates. We liked the variety of colors using construction paper gave us.)

Cut a piece of Press ‘n Seal plastic wrap that is a bit larger than your paper circle, and place it sticky side up. (If you are using clear contact paper, peel off the paper and place it sticky side up.)

Press the paper circle to the center.

Arrange your flower petals inside the circle.

Allow your child to place them any way they’d like, but make sure they are laid fairly flat. (One benefit of using the plastic wrap is that it is easier to move petals around.)

Once your child is finished, cut another piece of plastic wrap to cover the other side of the suncatcher.

Press the plastic wrap together and rub it to make sure it seals.

Use scissors to trim off the excess.

Use a small piece of clear tape to hang it in a sunny window and enjoy!

Your child may choose to create a pattern with the flower petals.

They can also create pictures with them like we did with our leaf creatures craft.

Whatever they choose, they will wind up with a beautiful flower petal suncatcher they will be proud to display.

10 Easter Crafts for Preschoolers

We have done quite a few spring crafts over the years. Some of our favorite have been Easter crafts.

I am especially fond of the crafts we did when the kids were younger. These simple Easter crafts for preschoolers are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, and I bet a few bigger kids would like some of these as well!

Easter Crafts for Preschoolers

This Tissue Paper Cross Collage turns out beautiful, and it’s a great way to start talking about the meaning of Easter.

Celebrate April Showers with This Simple Crayon Resist Painting

Spring is just around the corner.

When it comes to spring crafts for kids, there are plenty of bunny crafts and sheep crafts.

This crayon resist painting is a fun April showers craft to celebrate those rain showers that ultimately bring such beautiful flowers in May.

April Showers Craft

Materials Needed:

Crayons, including a white crayon
Water Color Paper
Water Color Paints and Brushes
Craft Sponge (optional)

To start your spring crayon resist painting, use the crayons to draw a spring-related picture on your paper.

We drew brightly colored rainbows and umbrellas. A cute yellow duck or spring flowers would also be fun to draw on a spring rain painting.

Make sure as you draw your picture that you color in all the white areas with a firm and even pressure. This will ensure that the paint doesn’t cover up the image later.

Once you have your picture finished, use the white crayon to cover the paper with raindrops. If you drew an umbrella make sure you avoid drawing raindrops underneath it.

It can be difficult to see white crayon as you draw. We discovered that if you look at your picture from an angle you can see the raindrops.

The next step is optional. Rub a damp craft sponge across your page. This will help the paint spread and blend easier.

Then use your water color paints to cover the paper in shades of blue.

The raindrops will magically appear!

You can use store bought water color paints, or try using your own homemade liquid watercolors.

If you use liquid water colors (like we did) I suggest skipping the step of dampening your paper as the extra water will cause the paint to lose some of its vibrancy.

This April Showers craft using crayon resist painting is fun to do on a rainy day. Your kids will love how the brightly colored crayon drawing seems to “pop” against the rainy background.

How to Make a Fuzzy Pom Pom Chick

Spring is in the air, and with it spring showers. Rainy days are perfect for crafting. As the kids have gotten older we’ve ventured into some simple tween craft ideas.

Lately we have gone crazy making pom poms into cute little pom pom animals. The kids have been busy making a new little friend every day this week. This little pom pom chick is definitely my favorite.

This cute little pom pom chick would be a fun tween craft for spring break. It would also be a fun surprise as a non candy Easter egg filler.

Pom Pom Chick Tutorial

Materials Needed:

12 inch (30.5 cm) piece of yellow yarn
4 (yards (3.66 meters) of yellow yarn
metal dinner fork (one with 4 tines)
wiggly eyes
yellow and orange card stock
scissors
craft glue (We used Tacky Glue.)

Directions:

Thread the shorter piece of yarn through the middle tines of the fork, making sure there is an equal amount on both sides.

While holding the shorter piece of yarn in place, start wrapping the longer piece of yarn around the base of the fork. Be sure to cross over the end of the yarn as you wrap. Keep the yarn snug and close together as you continue wrapping up towards the end of the fork. When you are about 1/4 inch away from the tip, start wrapping back towards the fork’s base.

Continue wrapping until you are out of yarn. Use the tip of your scissors to tuck the loose end of the yarn under the wrapped strands.

Pull the ends of the shorter piece of yarn up, taking the back piece up through the center tines. Tie the ends together.

Slide the yarn off the fork and flip it over. Bring the ends of the yarn around to the back and tie it tightly. Tie it a second time to secure it.

Use the scissors to cut the loops on both sides of the pom pom. We found it helps to go slow and to use the very tip of the scissors. Be sure to cut all the loops.

Then use your scissors to cut the long strands of yarn and to trim the rest of the pom pom strands to all the same length. Roll the pom pom in your hands to even it out and make it look more round. Trim as necessary.

After making a pom-pom, it is time to turn it into a cute, fuzzy chick.

Cut a small oval from orange card stock. Fold the oval in half and crease it. Use a small dab of glue on the folded edge and glue it to your chick, tucking it into the yarn a bit.

Use tacky glue to glue on 2 wiggly eyes.

Cut 2 matching wings from your yellow card stock. Ours were approximate 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) long. Add a bit of glue to both sides of the wing and then wiggle it in between the yarn to glue it in place.

This pom pom chick has seen plenty of pretend play this week. Make a batch of chicks to use as non candy Easter egg filler. Or get the kids together over spring break and make a few as a fun kids spring craft.
