March is the perfect time to decorate the house with some fun St. Patrick’s Day crafts.  And when it comes to St. Patty’s crafts, you just can’t beat shamrocks and colorful rainbow crafts for kids.  

We had fun putting the two ideas together and make suncatchers.  

Each rainbow shamrock suncatcher is a colorful touch of spring hanging in the window.

During the winter we had fun making these tie-dyed snowflakes.    They inspired this simple craft.  

Making this colorful rainbow suncatcher is easy enough for a toddler and fun for older kids as well.

Shamrock Suncatcher

Materials Needed:

• White Disposable Coffee Filters
• Washable Markers
• Spray Bottle
• Construction Paper
• Glue Stick

Directions: 

Start by having your child use washable markers to color their coffee filters.   You will need one coffee filter for each suncatcher.  

For a bit of extra fun, we suggest using these scented markers.

 Encourage your child to fill in all the white space.   The more they decorate it, the more vivid the colors will be on their suncatcher. 

To make a rainbow shamrock suncatcher, have them color the coffee filter in a rainbow pattern.    

Once they are decorated, spread the coffee filters out on paper towels.  The paper towels will help lessen the mess during the next step.  

Have your child spray their design with water using their spray bottle.  (My son loves this sprayer.)

Watch the colors begin to swirl together.

Allow the coffee filters to dry completely.  This is the perfect time to start planning that Leprechaun trap! 

Rainbow Shamrock Suncatcher

To make the frame for your shamrock suncatcher, fold a piece of construction paper in half.  Then fold it in half again.

Cut a heart from the folded paper, using the inner corner of the paper as the heart’s point and leaving the sides intact.  

This will create a shamrock shaped hole in the paper.

It’s important that the heart you cut is a little smaller than 1/4 of the size of your coffee filter.  

Sit the solid clover shape down. 

Then cut around the shamrock shape  in your folded paper again to make the frame.  We made ours approximately 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) thick.

Use a glue stick or clear tape to attach the clover frame onto one of the tie-dyed coffee filters.

Use scissors to trim off the extra coffee filter.  

Then hang your rainbow catchers on your window with clear tape.  If desired, tape the solid construction paper shamrocks to the window, too.

The rainbow shamrock suncatcher looks beautiful in the windows.   With the temperatures warming up, it’s the perfect St. Patrick’s Day craft to add a touch of spring.

Building a Leprechaun trap is a fun STEM challenge that you can do at home.

This is one of the kids’ favorite St. Patrick’s Day activities that they ask to do year after year.

Kids love STEM activities.  This one is perfect for March.

Your kids will also love making these rainbow shamrocks.

St. Patrick’s Day STEM: Building a Leprechaun Trap

This STEM activity was all about the process.  It also was about teamwork, as I asked my children to work together to build one Leprechaun trap.

They started off by sketching a few simple ideas.  My daughter drew a box with the lid held up by a stick, ready to fall on the unsuspecting Leprechaun when he grabbed a gold coin.  My son was leaning towards a pit trap idea.  As they discussed their plans, I gathered up a few materials they could use to build the trap.

Materials you may want for building your own Leprechaun Trap:

• Shoe box or other small box
• Plastic cups
• Cardboard tubes
• Building blocks
• Construction paper  (Leprechauns love color!)
• Clear tape
• Glue
• Scissors
• Fake coins (I got ours in the party section of the dollar store.)

Once the materials were gathered, they were able to manipulate them and get a better idea of what they wanted their trap to look like.   They started off trying out the stick trap idea, but then they both agreed a pit trap would be more effective.

To prevent cut fingers, I asked them to draw where they wanted the hole for the pit trap, and then I cut it out.  The rest was completely up to them.  They used building blocks to build a stairway up to the top of the box and created a paper rainbow to go over the pit trap area.

Of course a pit trap isn’t a pit trap unless you cover up the hole.  They cut out strips of colorful paper to form a rainbow over the hole in the box’s lid.  Then they scattered a few plastic coins on top to entice the Leprechaun.  My daughter decided to tape a few more coins to the stairs, like a trail for him to follow.

I thought they might decorate the sides of the box, but the purpose of this activity isn’t really about how the trap looks.  It was all about the process.  They worked together, planned, and tested out their trap with small toy figures.   And they had a great time being creative.

Now to wait and see if a Leprechaun gets caught in our trap tonight!

It has been a long time since we have played with our colored rice.  This week my daughter pulled out all the colors we had. When she realized we almost had a complete rainbow of colors, she asked if we could put them all together, and our rainbow treasure hunt sensory bin was formed!

To make our bin, I pulled out the large under the bed storage container I keep for sensory play.

My daughter helped to carefully pour each color into the bin.  (We had a lot of the red, white, and pink mix from our candy cane rice!)

Once all the colored rice was in the bin, she hunted out some LEGO Friends, along with a small treasure chest and pieces of “gold.”

We scattered some of the treasure on top, and I hid some under the rice for her to hunt for.

For an extra touch of magic, I sprinkled a bit of glitter across the rice before she went on her treasure hunt.

She had lots of fun discovering all the hidden treasure, and I had lots of fun creating a sensory bin with my daughter’s help.
