It would also make a fun decoration for a Star Wars birthday party.

Affiliate links have been provided below. Find my full disclosure here.

As I mentioned in my pool noodle lightsaber craft, my kids have gotten into Star Wars lately. This year we will be celebrating Star Wars Day.

This Star Wars craft is sure to be a huge hit with any fan all year long.

Star Wars R2D2 Craft

Materials Needed:

Empty powdered drink mix container (I used a large protein shake container, but an Ovaltine container would also work.)

Aluminum foil

Cardboard (An old cereal box would work.)

Blue duct tape

Silver/grey duct tape

Black duct tape

White duct tape

Hot glue gun (I love this one.)

Picture of R2-D2 (optional)

How to Make R2D2

Start by removing the label from your drink container.

I have found that most powdered drink mix containers are white — perfect for making R2D2. If yours is clear you could easily cover it with a few strips of white duct tape.

Next use aluminum foil to create a dome shape on top of the container’s lid. (See photo below.)

With the dull-side out, cover the dome and the lid with foil, tucking the edges around the lid’s edge. Trim off excess foil as needed.

Even though most drink containers have a screw-on lid, we were able to snap our back on to the drink container when we finished. You have just made R2D2’s head.

Using cardboard, cut out the droid’s two side legs.

You could leave R2 standing straight with just those 2 legs at his sides, or you can tilt him backwards a bit like he’s moving, which is what we did.

To accomplish this, cut a short strip of cardboard. Score it a bit and fold it into thirds. Tape the two ends together and push down on it a bit. (See photo below.)

Now it’s time for the duct tape.

Cover R2’s legs with white duct tape. Using blue duct tape add a blue stripe to the center of his side legs.

Cut a small grey duct tape circle and stick this to the top of the blue stripe.

Using your blue, black, and grey duct tape, continue decorating your R2D2. We used a few photos of R2 in this Star Wars droid book to make ours as accurate as possible.

Once you are finished decorating your droid, use the hot glue gun to attach his legs.

You now have an adorable R2D2 that is perfect for any Star Wars celebration.

Grab your lightsaber and duct tape and start making this R2D2 craft to celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4.

We used ours as a DIY Star Wars birthday party decoration. It looked cute sitting on the table by our DIY Darth Vader cake.

Whether you are looking for a May the 4th Be with You craft, or a Star Wars party activity, lightsabers are always fun.

This simple Star Wars craft is perfect for Star Wars fans of all ages. (I mean, who can resist swinging their very own lightsaber?)

And I promise this pool noodle lightsaber craft will be a huge hit (pun intended) at your Star Wars party.

Affiliate links have been used below. See my full disclosure policy here.

For us it all started with a picture book that told the stories of the original three Star Wars movies. What started as curiosity and flipping through those pages has turned into a Star Wars obsession for both my kids.

I even had to come up with a DIY Darth Vader cake for my son who favors the Dark Side.

You can easily find pool noodles at the dollar store. And most people have duct tape and electrical tape at home, making this Star Wars kids craft not only easy, but super inexpensive as well.

Materials Needed:

Pool Noodles

Silver or Grey Duct Tape

Black Electrical Tape

Serrated Kitchen Knife (I used my bread knife.)

Colored Duct Tape (optional)

Pool Noodle Lightsaber Craft

First, use a serrated knife to cut your pool noodle in half. (This step should be done by an adult.) You can also choose to use an entire pool noodle for a super long, extra wiggly lightsaber that is fun to use outside.

Next, cover the bottom hole of the noodle with duct tape.

One piece will not cover it completely. Overlapping two pieces that are approximately 5 inches long does a nice job.

Once the bottom is covered it is time to create your lightsaber’s hilt.

Tear off 10 inch long sections of duct tape for your child to wrap around the bottom portion of the lightsaber. The first piece should overlap the duct tape pieces covering the hole at the bottom.

You will need 3-4 pieces of duct tape to make your hilt, depending on how big you want it to be and how much your child overlaps each piece.

Finally, it’s time to personalize the hilt with electrical tape.

For a younger child you may want to just cut various lengths of tape for them to use.

Older children can wrap the electrical tape around the hilt and cut it to the length they want on their own.

If you have other colors of duct tape, they can use it for details like buttons.

If your kids are anything like mine a lightsaber duel will happen immediately. (These are perfect for lots of Star Wars party games.)

Unlike those plastic lightsabers they sell at the stores, pool noodle lightsabers don’t hurt if you get caught in a battle.

They can even be used inside. And, if one breaks, you can easily make a new one.

I love it when a good book inspires an interest in something new. I have a feeling this Star Wars obsession will be around for a while at our house.
