Kids love scavenger hunts. That’s probably why there are so many fun egg hunt ideas this time of year.

If you are looking for some fun ways to practice math facts at home, this simple idea would be perfect this month.

Get the kids moving and having fun with this simple Easter egg math activity.

We love using our colorful eggs in lots of plastic egg activities each spring.

There are so many fun ideas for little ones, but this one is perfect for elementary kids. After all, they deserve to have fun while learning, too!

Easter Egg Math Activity

To begin, decide which math facts your child will be working on.

For early learners you may want to focus on simple addition problems. For older kids you can use it to work on subtraction, multiplication, or even division facts.

You could even make it more challenging by creating problems using a combination of math facts.

Once you have determined which math facts to focus on, you can start creating your problems.

Cut small slips of paper that can fit inside your eggs. Use a pen to write a math problem on one slip, then write the answer to the problem on a separate slip.

Continue doing this until you have enough problems and answers to fill the eggs you are using.

In each egg place either a piece of paper with a problem or an answer. To make it even more fun, you may want to include a small piece of candy or a sticker in some of the eggs as well.

When finished, make sure the eggs are closed securely. Then hide them.

Hunting for eggs outside is a great way to get the kids moving in the fresh air. Of course, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, you can hide them inside instead.

Math Facts Egg Hunt

Once the eggs are hidden, give your child a basket, or a small bucket, and send them on their math facts egg hunt.

Have them place the eggs they find into their basket.

Once they have collected the eggs you may want them to open them indoors. We discovered the tiny slips of paper blew away in the slightest breeze.

Challenge your child to match the math problems with the correct answers.

If you have more than one child participating, they can help each other.

We had a lot of team work going on as the kids worked together to solve the problems. For instance, “I have 8×5. Do you have 40?”

Saying the problem and answer out loud adds a new layer to the learning.

Your child has the visual aspect of seeing the problem, the auditory factor of hearing it, and some kinesthetic learning going on as they manipulate the slips of paper to match problems and answers.

This Easter egg math activity is a fun way to work on math facts this spring.

Maybe they tap their pencil while all the other kids are listening to the teacher read. Or maybe they just can’t seem to stay in their seat.

While many kids learn by listening or by reading something, these kids learn best by moving their bodies. When it comes to learning math facts and other math concepts, these active learners need more than just worksheets.

These kinesthetic math activities are perfect for kids that need to move.

Printable math games can make learning more fun, but some kids are kinesthetic learners. They learn better by moving their bodies. (This is definitely my daughter.)

That’s why kinesthetic learning activities are so important to incorporate into the classroom and at home.

You can get kids moving and learning with these active math games.

Fun Math Games

While I like coming up with hands-on ways to practice math skills at home, sometimes it’s nice to have an activity your child can do without all the prep work.

From math board games and other games, your child can have fun practicing math anytime and anywhere with these ideas.

Monkey Math — (ages 4-7) This fun math game is perfect for kids who are just learning addition. I love that it combines addition with the idea of a simple scale. Your child will have fun hanging the numbered bananas from the monkey’s hands. If the numbers on each side add up to the same number, the monkey will look straight at you with his arms level. If not, his eyes will cross and his arms will hang down.

Sums in Space — (ages 5+) Kids will have fun working on adding and subtracting numbers 0-9, comparing greater/less than, and identifying even and odd numbers, all with a space twist. With 3 difficulty levels, this game will grow with your child.

Ocean Raiders — (ages 4-8) Watch out for storms and brave whirlpools as you try to get to the treasure at the bottom of the ocean. Your kids will have a blast working on 1 and 2 digit addition facts in this adventure game.

Sum Swamp — (ages 5+) Have fun moving your swamp creature through the swamp in this award-winning game. Roll the dice and then add or subtract to determine how many spaces your character will go. Who will get to the finish line first?

Head Full of Numbers — (ages 7+) Place the dice in the silly shaker and roll. Then set the timer and see how many equations you can make with the numbers you’ve rolled. Your child will have fun working on addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division skills alone or with the whole family in this fast-paced game that is perfect for working on fact fluency.

Dino Math Tracks — (ages 6+) Practice math skills with a dinosaur twist! Roll the 4 dice and then put your dinosaur pieces in the right place value spots (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). Kids will also strengthen addition and subtraction skills as they work to get to the finish line.

Math Dice Jr. — (ages 5+) This is the perfect math game for on the go. Roll the 12 sided die to reveal a number, then roll the other 5 dice to give you a set of numbers with which you have to make the first number. You can use multiplication, addition, division and subtraction to achieve this goal. This game is best suited for kids who have mastered their math facts.

Money Bags — (ages 5+) Learn how to collect, count, and exchange money in this fun math game. In order to collect money, kids must use the spinner. If it says “no nickels,” they have to count out their money without using nickels. If they land on “Bank Exchange” they can exchange their money (2 dimes and a nickel for a quarter). Whoever has the most money at the end of the game wins.

Math War Multiplication Cards — (ages 8+) For just a couple dollars your child will have fun practicing multiplication facts with this simple card game. Players solve the math problem on their card and lay them down, just as in the usual War card game, the card with the highest value wins.

Zoom — (ages 9+) This is another fun multiplication card game. Just when you think one player is winning, you pull a wild card and the score suddenly zooms forward, or backward, or no where at all.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I wanted to incorporate some Valentine’s-themed learning activities into our school activities. After all, February is the perfect time for Valentine’s Day activities.

These Matching Hearts Math Games are simple to set up and provide plenty of learning fun.

Matching Hearts Valentine Math Game

To create your own matching hearts math game, you will first need a selection of paper hearts.

I cut ours from thick red construction paper, cutting several at the same time to ensure they’d all be the same size. (Using the same color of paper and making the hearts all the same size will increase the difficulty level of the memory game!)

Next, write simple addition problems on half the hearts and the corresponding answers on the other half.

You can also use subtraction, multiplication, or division facts.

Then it’s time to play your Valentine’s Day Math Game!

There are two ways to play with the hearts.

First, give your child a handful of hearts and ask them to simply match the math equation to the correct answer. This is great for students just starting to learn the math facts.

The second activity is a simple math memory game.

Mix up the hearts and then turn them all upside down. Play the game like your typical memory game, flipping hearts over to find two hearts that match.

How to modify the Valentine’s Day Math Activity

You could easily modify this activity to fit the age and learning level of your kids.

For preschoolers you could place a specific number of dots on half the hearts (1 dot, 2 dots, 3 dots….) and the corresponding numbers on the other half of the hearts (1, 2, 3….) to work on counting skills.

Or, you could even do lower case and upper case letters!

For older children you could use subtraction, multiplication, or even division problems.

Or, give it a reading twist and use sight words or vocabulary words on half the cards and definitions on the other half.

We have been having lots of fun with this simple Matching Hearts Valentine’s Day math activity.
