Kids love finding hidden words and pictures. In the past we have done some crayon-resist painting to practice reading sight words. I’ve been looking forward to doing more crayon-resist painting with the kids, and this week we used our homemade watercolor paints to go on a crayon-resist egg hunt!

To go on your own crayon-resist egg hunt with the kids, you will need to do a little preparation ahead of time.

You will also need the following materials:

Paper suitable for painting

White crayon

Paint brushes

Paint (We used our homemade liquid watercolors.)

To prepare, use the white crayon to draw several Easter eggs all over your piece of paper. (Tip: Since white crayon is hard to see on white paper, I found that if you lean sideways and tilt your head just a bit you can see what you are drawing a little easier.)

Once you have your eggs “hidden”, it’s time to call the kids in for the hunt!

Give each child a paintbrush and a small amount of paint. Tell them you’ve hidden some eggs and they must use their paintbrush to find them.

They will have fun discovering each hidden egg as they paint their paper.

This activity is great for younger children, who can practice counting skills as they discover each egg.

It’s also fun for older kids, who can draw their own eggs on the paper and exchange them with each other for the hunt.

Once they are finished, let the crayon-resist paintings dry. They can be hung as colorful Easter decorations.

When it comes to kids Easter crafts, there are tons of bunny, egg, and chick crafts.

But there is a lot more to Easter.

This preschooler cross craft is perfect for introducing the true meaning of Easter.

This simple preschooler Easter craft turns out so pretty.

Preschooler Cross Craft

Materials Needed:

Colored Tissue Paper

Craft Glue (We love Elmer’s.)

Brown or Black Construction Paper

White Craft Paper

Scissors

Start by cutting the tissue paper into 1 inch squares. (Or purchase these pre-cut squares.)

Have your child to glue the tissue paper squares onto their white craft paper. They may choose to glue them in a pattern, or just randomly glue the squares.

Once they are finished gluing the tissue paper, cut a cross shape from the brown construction paper. Glue it atop the colored squares.

As an alternative, your child can glue the cross on first and then add the tissue paper.

This is what my preschooler did, applying his glue stick very liberally, all over his paper, so he could sprinkle his tissue paper pieces onto the glue so he wouldn’t need to touch the sticky tissue paper pieces.

This simple preschooler cross craft for Easter is a wonderful way to start a discussion about the reason behind Easter.

Time to use that science experiment with the coffee filters we did last week for a craft!

Our first coffee filter craft was a flower.

The flowers are super easy! We chose to use some fancy scissors with a scalloped edge to trim the top of each coffee filter. You could totally skip that step if you want to.

Then, all you do is open up the coffee filter, pinch the bottom part and wrap a green pipe cleaner tightly around the bottom. You may need to help younger children wind the pipe cleaner tight.

My daughter was thrilled to have her very own bouquet of coffee filter flowers!

Our second coffee filter craft was a butterfly.

First we folded the coffee filter accordion style.

Then we cut along the seems and opened it up to make the wings. (Our filters were cone-shapped. For regular filters just fold the filter in half and cut a triangular wedge from each side to form wings.)

We glued a clothes pin onto the “wings” to make a body. Then we added google eyes and hot glued sparkly pipe cleaner for antennae.

These coffee filter butterflies would be super cute on the refrigerator. Just glue a magnet onto the back.

Simple Preschooler Chick Craft

Materials Needed:

Cotton Balls

Egg Carton

Yellow Construction Paper

Wiggly Eyes

Liquid Craft Glue

Paintbrush (optional)

Cut the egg holders out of an egg carton. For toddlers and young preschoolers you may want to do this step ahead of time.

Glue one cotton ball inside the egg cup for the chick’s body and another on top of that for the chick’s head. (Tip: Let little ones use a paintbrush to apply the glue to avoid a sticky situation!)

Next glue on simple construction paper beaks and wiggly eyes. (Everything is better with wiggly eyes!)

My daughter chose to “girlie” hers up a bit more with a bit of pink feather tail sticking out of the chick’s shell.

These cotton ball chicks were such a fun preschooler chick craft that the kids each chose to make several. Once they are dry, they are fun for little ones to use in pretend play.
