We don’t do a lot of juice around here, but in summer time those single-serving drink pouches are pretty handy for taking on trips to the park and zoo. I toss them in the freezer ahead of time and they help keep lunch cold; as a bonus they make a refreshing drink on a hot day when they thaw.

But what do you do with the pouches afterwards? It seems such a waste to add them all to the landfill.

We had fun making drink pouch change purses with them at one of our last Girl Scout meetings of the year. This recycled craft was a great way to teach the girls to use their resources wisely.

Affiliate links provided below. See my full disclosure here.

This simple craft would be fun as a camp craft or as a lesson on recycling and reusing materials.

Recycled Craft: Drink Pouch Change Purse

Materials Needed:

Empty Drink Pouch

Self Sticking Hook and Loop (Velcro)

Scissors

Stickers (optional)

To make your own change purse you will first cut across the top of the drink pouch. Then cut a rectangle from the top half of the front side of the pouch. Be careful to only cut through the front layer!

(Sorry for the dark picture; the school cafeteria is not optimal for good pics!)

Next, wash the inside of the drink pouch with soap and water and dry thoroughly.

You will then fold the top half into a triangle and attach Velcro to make a fastener.

To ensure the Velcro on the top and bottom meet correctly, we put the pieces together and attached them to the top portion. Then we removed the adhesive from the bottom piece, closed the change purse and pressed down hard to get the bottom piece of Velcro to stick to the body of the change purse.

Of course girls like to give their crafts a bit of “bling.”

We used craft foam stickers to decorate the change purses. (A few REALLY got into this part!)

The girls were all very proud of their new drink pouch change purses and couldn’t wait to show them off to parents. It was one of their favorite recycled crafts that year.

If you have a toddler or preschooler that loves rockets, than this craft is perfect for you.

Get ready to blast off with this jet pack craft!

This kids craft involves recycled soda pop bottles.

We just don’t drink that much pop, and I hardly ever buy 2 liters because they tend to go flat before we finish them. But I did have access to some 16 oz. pop bottles. (If you make a few magical frozen pop slushies, just keep those bottles for this craft.)

Jet Pack Craft

Materials Needed:

2 empty pop bottles (either 2 liter or 16 oz. bottles will work)

aluminum foil

red or orange tissue paper

cardboard

colored duct tape (We chose blue.)

Cut your piece of cardboard into a square that is a bit wider than the 2 soda pop bottles laying side by side. The piece of cardboard will serve as a base for your jet pack.

To create straps for the jet pack, measure how long they need to be and then double the length.

Cut 2 pieces of duct tape this length, and then fold the tape in half, sticky sides together to form each strap. Use a bit of tape to secure the straps to the cardboard so it forms a backpack.

Next, cover the plastic bottles with aluminum foil. This is a great step for little ones to help with. You could use silver paint, but aluminum foil is mess-free. Plus, most people have it on hand already, a big plus in my book.

Once the bottles are covered, use strips of duct tape to hold them onto the cardboard base.

Cut or rip squares of red or orange tissue paper and tape them inside the mouths of the pop bottles to form flames. Your child is ready to fly!

This simple jet pack craft is sure to spark hours of pretend play for your little one.

It starts out with a couple innocent bow clips for their little baby hair, then a few tangle-free mini rubber bands for those tiny little pony tails.

And the next thing you know you can’t close the medicine cabinet because headbands and barrettes keep tumbling out faster than you can shut the door!

Until recently we had hair twisters in baggies in the medicine cabinet, headbands in the dress-up drawer of my daughter’s room, and barrettes probably in every room of the house. I really wanted to have all the supplies in one convenient place. I tried using some little storage containers to put them in the medicine cabinet, but the headbands did not want to cooperate, and the rest of it just took up too much room.

There’s a simple recycled craft that is the perfect solution!

Make this DIY Hair Supplies Organizer and contain the hair accessory clutter.

DIY Hair Supplies Organizer

Materials Needed:

large, clean food canister (We used a large cocoa can, but an oatmeal container will also work.)

Colorful Scrapbook Paper

Hot Glue Gun

Scissors

A large cocoa can, or even a large oatmeal canister, is just the right size for sticking headbands around. The inside is perfect for holding hairbrushes and twist ties or barrettes.

The first step is to cover your container with some pretty paper.

Measure the container carefully. Cut your paper so the ends will overlap just a bit. Use the hot glue gun to secure it in place.

When you are finished, stick all those pretty headbands around the outside.

Fill the canister with hairbrushes, combs, and the numerous hair ties that always seem to disappear.

That’s it! You’ve got a totally simple and affordable way to contain the clutter of hair accessories.

And the best part of this DIY hair supplies organizer?

No more twist ties and headbands falling out of the medicine cabinet every time the door is opened.
