Last Thankful Thursday I shared a few things that my kids did to make me smile. This week’s Thankful Thursday post was inspired by Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompt: Someone you talked to today.
And the winner is: my sister!
Whenever Aunt C. calls, the kids know I am going to be on the phone for a while. You see, my sister is a talker.
With 7 years between us, we didn’t always have much common ground. When I was into baby dolls, she was in to boys. When I was just starting to get interested in boys, she was married and having her first child.
Now a days?
With hundreds of miles between us, telephones help keep us connected.
We swap stories about what our kids have done lately.
We talk about how men can’t seem to get their dirty clothes in the hamper.
We sneak around behind our parents’ backs… (Shh…. My parents don’t know it yet, but my sister’s family is meeting us in Florida this year!)
When we call each other, “Hi,” is not necessary.
If I start the call with, “Why can’t Hot Wheels fall into an empty toilet instead of one that’s been used?” she doesn’t skip a beat. She’s been there.
If I answer the phone and hear, “I’m sending my son to you,” I know there is a story coming.
My own two little ones keep life interesting.
But my sister?
My sister runs a daycare in her home. She is never out of stories! Daughter slathered her brother in my good lotion? I no sooner tell my sister and she is laughing and telling me about the cake she baked for church that her youngest and the rest of the daycare kids demolished. And then she is going on about what happened the day before that, poop up to the child’s neck… (I admit it, sometimes I call her just to feel better about my own day…)
This week I’m thankful for telephones. And sisters. And the phone calls sisters share.

Leave a comment telling me who you enjoy talking to on the phone most.
And, if you have your own Thankful post, go ahead and link it up with us!

Whoa. I’m really glad I don’t have kids yet! I mean, I’m looking forward to it, but your life sounds crazy! On the other hand, what hilarious stories! 😀 Thanks for sharing and for hosting the linkup!

Oh, they are blessings, don’t get me wrong! They just like to make sure that no day is ever boring! 🙂

I used to enjoy talking to my Mother on the phone. She has been gone for over ten years now, and I still miss those conversations. She called me every night at 7:00 PM, no matter what or where I was living. I used to call my father, but not every night, he was never a telephone person. I lost him last summer. So now I talk mostly to my brother, but maybe only once a week or so. I know I missed out by not having a sister. You are pretty lucky to have one!
OneMommy says
I’m sorry to hear about your loss.
My dad is definitely NOT a phone person, either. Neither is my brother.
I never thought about how lucky I was to have a sister until recently when we really started talking so much.

I love this post! It reminds me of the days before Lovebug figured out this whole “talking on the phone” business. I try to FaceTime with my sisters and no sooner do I connect the call, she is grabbing the phone and talking up a storm. She even takes them on a tour of the house (and proudly shows them that she went “peep” in the potty. 😉
OneMommy says
Oh my goodness! She sounds like quite a character!
Heather Przybyla says
Quite the character indeed! 😉

My parents have no computer access, nor do they have any idea how to use the Internet. Now, if another family member lets it slip, that’s a different story!

When I was a kid I never dreamed we’d ever have anything in common — I love talking to her now! Thanks for linking up this week!

My girlfriends for sure! Your parents have no computer access? That’s really unusual in this day and age.
OneMommy says
No, my mom has wanted to get a computer, but my dad keeps telling her they are too old to start learning that. Honestly, they were so confused by their first cell phone, that it probably is easier if they don’t get one.

Cute post. I don’t have a sister to share things with, but I do have lots of sister-friends.
OneMommy says
Sister-friends are awesome!
I have one that I’ve been friends with since early elementary school. She was always closer to me than my real sister growing up. She actually married the boy I grew up next door to and who was like a brother to me. I love when we can all get together!

I don’t have a sister…I do have a brother, and although he isn’t much of a phone person at all, when we do talk we talk about anything and everything for hours. My mom and I talk every Sunday night, for no less than 2 hours…sometimes we catch a phone call during the week too 🙂
You are so blessed to have such a wonderful relationship with your sister!!
Visiting from Mama Kat’s 🙂

My brother is definitely not a talker…. When I call him the conversation doesn’t last more than 5 minutes.
So nice you talk to your mom for so long! 🙂

I actually talk most to my 2 grown sons (21 and 23). I’m fortunate to have beautiful relationships with them both and my eldest and I can spend a couple of HOURS on the phone, discussing everything under the sun! He’s incredibly intelligent, and I’m not just saying that ’cause I’m his mom, but I honestly would pay to hear him debate or speak at any event. He’s THAT good. My sons are among my biggest blessings in my life.
OneMommy says
There is NO doubt about it, kids are blessings! I love that you are so close to your sons!

Love talking to my sister who is also my best friend…we both have twins so life is busy, not to mention a 5-6 hour time difference but when we do catch up, we share a lot of laughs.
OneMommy says
I love that you both have twins! What a blessing to share!
