Father’s Day.

I HAD to go to the grocery store. We were seriously low on food – think an inch of milk in the carton, a few slices of bread, no fresh fruit or veggies…

Monkey wanted to go with me.

And Peanut? She had big plans for her and Daddy!

“Daddy, after our tea party, maybe we can make jewelry,” I heard her say as she handed him his plastic tea cup.

“Honey, maybe you should wait to do that until Mommy comes home,” I said gently, thinking that probably wasn’t high on Daddy’s list. Besides, I didn’t want to have to hunt up all the stuff right then.

Imagine my surprise when after she suggested the jewelery again Daddy told her he had some beads downstairs. Off he went and brought up some beads I’d never seen before and a spool of waxed twine.

This was the scene when I left.

( I have to confess, looking at the two of them, a Daddy trying so hard to make his little girl happy, I fell in love with my husband all over again. )

When I came home from the grocery store, Peanut couldn’t wait to show me her rainbow necklace. (She made Daddy one, too, out of black and brown wood beads, which he was wearing proudly when I came in.)

That was our high moment on Father’s Day this year.

Our low?

Monkey told me how tired he was after the grocery store. We figured he’d perk up when we went to Mamaw and Papaw’s house. He didn’t.

He was lethargic – and when I kissed his forehead, he was burning up!

I sent Daddy home for children’s Tylenol and finally convinced my little guy to eat a popsicle. Then the poor little thing puked all over Papaw while they snuggled in front of some cartoons. (Sorry Papaw!) Needless to say we went home. He passed out almost immediately.

I’m glad to say he seems a lot better today.

Hopefully whatever virus it is starts and stops with him. But if you don’t hear from me for a while…just assume it ain’t pretty!

With Father’s Day coming up this Sunday, today’s post is dedicated to my husband for being such a great daddy to our 2 little ones.

***

Dearest Husband,

Thank you for being a wonderful father.

Although you didn’t have to, you came with me to many of those routine doctor’s appointments with our first child.

You were there to hold my hand with each scary pregnancy moment.

And you suggested we pray when there was nothing we could do but wait.

When I was nervous about the news we’d be having a second child, your joy in the news reassured me.

You used your vacation days to stay home with us when we arrived home from the hospital, and you rearranged your work schedule so you come home earlier in the day for more family time.

You try to find fun things for you and the kids to do when they have their individual daddy time with you, like taking Peanut to the dollar jewelry store at the mall and Monkey to Tractor Supply.

When I am feeling like a bad mother, you remind me of all the good things I’ve done and that no one is perfect.

You’ve changed quite a few diapers, wiped a lot of poopie butts, and helped clean up puke from the carpet. All in the name of love for your kids.

And even when you come home tired from work, you are willing to rough house with them, and become their own living jungle gym.

Thank you for reading endless books, bringing home donuts for the kids when you work nights, kissing many a boo-boo, singing your little girl to sleep every night, not complaining when I come home with yet another great deal from some kids’ consignment shop, and not laughing when I clutter the counter with toilet paper tubes for kid crafts.

And thank you for so much more that I can’t even begin to list here.

I hope you have a wonderful Father’s Day this year; you deserve it!

Love,

Babe

As always, I’d love to hear what you’re thankful for in the comments section!
