Father’s Day is coming up, and let’s face it, most dads don’t really need (or want) another store-bought tie. So what is it that Dad really wants?

I’ve spent the past few days asking just that.

These 12 women asked the men in their lives what they’d like this year for Father’s Day, and this is what they said.

A Father’s Day gift that goes with a favorite hobby is always a big hit!

“Car parts for his classic cars” — Kori, Just Another Mom

“He goes on a mancation golf tip right before Father’s Day every year so that is his gift.” — Kristin

“New propane fish/turkey fryer. But I’m also getting him a Qalo silicone wedding band. He’s mentioned wanting one a few times before to replace his silver band. Since he’s a firefighter, they just came out with a thin red line one, so I’m going to surprise him with that.” — Kimberly

Even dads like a little pampering.

“A day to sleep in and a massage (his crew is currently working 7 day/60+ hour weeks)” — Leanne, The Transplanted Southerner

I’ve always been a bit more a daddy’s girl than a mommy’s one.

Growing up I collected baseball cards. I really didn’t understand most of the stats on them, but I knew my daddy would sit down with me and go through them. He’d tell me about the players and we’d sort through them.

Want to know a secret?

I really didn’t care about those cards. It was that time we had, one on one.

Eventually I had a little brother, and he got old enough for baseball cards, too. That special time disappeared as I started junior high and became busy with school and extra curricular activities.

While mom would worry I was going to break an arm or something at gymnastics practice, Daddy never seemed to mind driving me to practice and picking me up.

In college I took up tae kwon do. Maybe fighting was in my blood, after all my grandpa was a professional fighter at one point and my daddy boxed as well.

Maybe I was still searching for a way to connect to with my daddy.

And then there was shooting.

I remember asking for some magazines for my Glock for Christmas. My mom was appalled! (She told me it wasn’t a very lady-like gift to ask for.) But Daddy delivered. My daddy isn’t much for telling you how he feels, but I’m pretty sure he was proud that his little girl was shooting at different target matches. (I should mention my daddy was a police officer for 30 something years.)

We try so hard as children to please our parents, and it really doesn’t stop when we reach adulthood. We still want that nod of approval.

This past year I’ve been hit with the reality that my parents aren’t going to be here forever. There is going to come a time when my daddy isn’t going to be there, quietly watching and supporting me.

It’s not an easy fact to face.

I’ve mentioned that my daddy doesn’t share his feelings often. Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I’ve worked hard to let my children know every day (not only with my actions but with those 3 important words, too) that I love them.

And this Father’s Day I’ve realized I need to use those words with my parents more, too. I need to let them know while there is still time.

So glad my sister and I decided to surprise Dad last year on his trip to Florida!)

Happy Father’s Day to all the great daddies out there, especially my daddy and my husband, who works hard trying to help me be the mommy I want to be.

The post Happy Father’s Day! first appeared on There's Just One Mommy.

Usually my husband makes breakfast on the weekends. But last week the kids and I wanted to do something special for him on Father’s Day.

French toast was requested, but I didn’t have enough bread – that is until I checked the freezer and found a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread.

I decided we’d have super easy cinnamon raisin French toast!

I just followed my usual, very easy French toast recipe.

I beat one egg and then scrambled in about 1/3 cup of milk and a dash of vanilla extract.

Once the griddle was good and hot, I melted some butter in the pan.

Then I quickly dipped each piece of bread into the batter. (Just dip and pull out right away so it doesn’t get too soggy!)

There should be enough batter to make 5-6 pieces of French toast. Just brown on both sides in the griddle.

Serve it warm with butter and syrup. Fresh fruit is also a yummy topping. Or serve it my kids’ favorite way (mine too) with butter and powdered sugar.

Yum!

Father’s Day.

I HAD to go to the grocery store. We were seriously low on food – think an inch of milk in the carton, a few slices of bread, no fresh fruit or veggies…

Monkey wanted to go with me.

And Peanut? She had big plans for her and Daddy!

“Daddy, after our tea party, maybe we can make jewelry,” I heard her say as she handed him his plastic tea cup.

“Honey, maybe you should wait to do that until Mommy comes home,” I said gently, thinking that probably wasn’t high on Daddy’s list. Besides, I didn’t want to have to hunt up all the stuff right then.

Imagine my surprise when after she suggested the jewelery again Daddy told her he had some beads downstairs. Off he went and brought up some beads I’d never seen before and a spool of waxed twine.

This was the scene when I left.

( I have to confess, looking at the two of them, a Daddy trying so hard to make his little girl happy, I fell in love with my husband all over again. )

When I came home from the grocery store, Peanut couldn’t wait to show me her rainbow necklace. (She made Daddy one, too, out of black and brown wood beads, which he was wearing proudly when I came in.)

That was our high moment on Father’s Day this year.

Our low?

Monkey told me how tired he was after the grocery store. We figured he’d perk up when we went to Mamaw and Papaw’s house. He didn’t.

He was lethargic – and when I kissed his forehead, he was burning up!

I sent Daddy home for children’s Tylenol and finally convinced my little guy to eat a popsicle. Then the poor little thing puked all over Papaw while they snuggled in front of some cartoons. (Sorry Papaw!) Needless to say we went home. He passed out almost immediately.

I’m glad to say he seems a lot better today.

Hopefully whatever virus it is starts and stops with him. But if you don’t hear from me for a while…just assume it ain’t pretty!
