Most kids love playing with slime.

My daughter is no exception; she loves getting her hands on a fresh batch of slime.

We have had lots of fun making different liquid starch slimes. They’ve all been such hits that we wanted to try making slime with glitter glue. (Who doesn’t love that fabulous color and the sparkle?)

What we came up with is an amazing red and pink sparkly Valentine’s Day Slime that would be a perfect DIY Valentine gift.

Making slime is always a fun STEM activity, and this slime is one of our favorite Valentine’s Day STEM activities!

Valentine’s Day Slime

This activity is a fun Valentine’s Day activity for kids your child will love!

Using glitter glue instead of regular glue to make this slime means no accidental “glitter explosions.” It actually makes clean up easier, and moms are all about easier clean up.

Not only is making homemade slime a wonderful sensory experience, it’s also a fun science activity.

Like Oobleck (cornstarch and water), slime is a Non-Newtonian fluid, meaning it’s not a true liquid or a true solid.

Slime is also a great way to introduce polymers. Check out this great post to find out more about the science of slime.

How to Make Slime with Glitter Glue

Affiliate links have been provided below. See my full disclosure for more details.

Materials Needed:

Red or Pink Glitter Glue

Liquid Starch

In a bowl, combine 6 oz. glitter glue with 1/2 cup liquid starch.

Stir it until it become a dough-like consistency. Then continue mixing it with your hands to help it come together as slime. (This is the perfect time for kids to help.)

If it still seems too sticky, add a small amount of liquid starch (1 Tablespoon at a time).

I have read several recipes that suggest adding a bit of water, a Tablespoon or so at a time to create the slime texture you desire. We were happy with our results of just using the glitter glue and liquid starch.

Your results will depend on what brand glue you use.

The red turned out beautiful.

But the sparkly pink slime won my daughter’s heart.

What I really like about this glitter glue slime recipe is you can modify it to fit your child’s interest.

My daughter wanted to keep the pink slime just a tad bit stickier, so we used a little less starch in it.

You can put the glitter glue slime in a small jar, add a ribbon and turn it into a simple DIY Valentine’s Day gift.

This Valentines Day Slime will keep for several weeks if put in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

There is one sure way to get my daughter smiling: make some amazing homemade slime!

There is just something about the stretchy, slightly sticky substance that kids love. And since liquid starch slime is so easy and quick to make, you can make a batch in just about any theme, like this snowflake slime, in just minutes.

You can make this ahead of time, or get the kids involved in making their own homemade slime. They’ll have a fun, ooey, gooey slime to play with in just 5 minutes.

Snowflake Slime

Affiliate links provided below.

Ingredients:

5 oz. Bottle Clear Elmer’s Glue

5 oz. Liquid Starch

Snowflake Confetti

5 oz. Warm Water

Measuring Cup

Bowl and Spoon

Make Your Own Snowflake Liquid Starch Slime:

Pour your clear glue into your bowl.

Then add in the same amount of warm water. Mix until the two are thoroughly combined. (I find using warm water helps it mix better.)

To make snowflake slime, add in a generous helping of plastic snowflake confetti pieces. We also tried adding artificial snow, but it wasn’t as noticeable in the finished slime.

Now for a bit of science!

Slowly pour in your 5 oz. of liquid starch and stir it with your spoon.

The mixture will immediately thicken. This is because glue is a polymer and the liquid starch is changing the structure of that polymer as the two come together. Head over to Little Bins for Little Hands to find out more about the science of slime.

Pretty soon it will become too thick to stir with a spoon. It’s time to pick it up and finish mixing in the liquid by hand. This is a great step for kids!

The slime gets better the more it is played with.

We had fun pairing this winter-themed liquid starch slime with some polar animals.

This snowflake slime also makes a fun DIY gift idea for kids.

Put the slime in a clear container with a screw on lid and add a polar animal or two for lots of sensory play fun.

The slime should keep for at least 2 weeks, and then you can mix up another batch in a whole new theme!

Have your kids caught slime fever yet? Not only is slime fun to play with, but making slime is a fun way to introduce polymers and viscosity to kids.

This week we decided to try mixing one of our favorite sensory play items, water beads, with the awesomeness that is homemade slime. The squishy water beads add a fun new texture in this water bead slime recipe.

While homemade slime is tons of fun to make, it is not recommended for kids under 3, and especially kids that still put objects in their mouth. This is especially true when adding water beads to the slime. If young children are in the house I advise playing with the slime in a high-sided container to keep the water beads from bouncing everywhere and posing a choking hazard to younger siblings.

Affiliate links have been provided below for your convenience.

Materials Needed:

Elmer’s Washable School Glue

Liquid Starch

Warm Water

Rainbow Colored Water Beads

Food Coloring (optional)

Start by hydrating your water beads, following the directions on the package. We used some of the beads we had ready for our Hidden Treasure Math Facts activity.

Once the water beads are hydrated, it’s time to mix up your slime.

In a small bowl, mix 4 oz. (118 ml.) of glue with 4 oz. of warm water. This is a great opportunity for older kids to work on measuring skills.

When the glue and water are thoroughly mixed, stir in 4 oz. of liquid starch. Be sure to shake your liquid starch up ahead of time!

Continue stirring until the mixture starts to pull away from the bowl.

As the mixture thickens it is a great opportunity to introduce viscosity to kids. The glue is a polymer (a large chain of molecules allows it to be poured). When it mixes with the liquid starch the chain of molecules changes, causing it to become more viscous. It also gives the slime that stretchiness that makes it so fun to play with.

If desired, add a few drops of food coloring. We chose green for St. Patrick’s Day. Stir until the coloring is fairly consistent, and then it will be time to use your hands.

If your slime is still too sticky, add a small amount of liquid starch (a tablespoon at a time).

Then add your water beads, folding them in and mixing with your hands.

The slippery and squishy water beads add a new texture to the slime.

As we played with our water bead slime, we noticed that unlike our googly eye slime, the water beads don’t actually stay in the slime. They do eventually work their way out of the slime as it stretches. However, it is still a fun sensory experience and amazing to play with.

So, how do you play with slime? My daughter could play with slime all day. She loves stretching it, squishing it, and feeling it as it covers her hands.

My son prefers to use small toys, like miniature dinosaurs, to play in the slime. Pushing the toys into the slime and feeling the suction of it against the toys as you pull them out is a great sensory experience for kids that don’t like to touch the slime itself.

Homemade slime is a fun sensory experience with a science twist. However your child chooses to play with it, this water bead slime is sure to be a favorite.
