When those Christmas decorations come down in January the house seems as bare as the winter trees outside the windows.  

This week, once we recovered from taking down the Christmas decor, we had fun with this super cute heart penguin craft to hang on the doors.

These penguins are adorable for winter or make them as a Valentine’s Day craft.

This cute little penguin craft is one of my favorite heart crafts for kids.

There is just something about penguins that makes everyone smile.

Paper Heart Penguin

Materials Needed:

• Black, white, and orange construction paper
• Googly eyes
• Glue stick or craft glue

Peguin Valentine Craft

To make the heart penguin’s head you will need a black construction paper circle.

For very young crafters you can have the shapes pre-cut.  

For older children you can trace the shape and have them cut it out, or let them do the tracing, too!   We traced a roll of masking tape to create the circle for our penguin heads.

Next cut out a white heart shape, slightly smaller than your circle.  Glue this to the black circle to create your penguin’s face.

A small orange heart makes a great beak.

Glue on googly eyes.  You could also have your child draw on eyes or cut them from paper, but the googly eyes make him extra adorable! 

To make your heart penguin’s body cut out a large  oval from black construction paper.

Cut out two smaller ovals from black paper.  Glue these to the sides of the large oval to become the penguin’s flippers.

Next, cut a large white heart that is smaller than the black oval.  Glue this heart on to the oval for the tummy.

Finally, cut out two small orange hearts and attach them as feet to complete your penguin craft for kids.

Once the paper heart penguin craft is dry, be sure to hang him up for everyone to see.  Your child may even want to make a few more for a little penguin family.

Spring is in the air, and with it spring showers.  Rainy days are perfect for crafting.  As the kids have gotten older we’ve ventured into some simple tween craft ideas.

Lately we have gone crazy making pom poms into cute little pom pom animals. The kids have been busy making a new little friend every day this week.  This little pom pom chick is definitely my favorite.

This cute little pom pom chick would be a fun tween craft for spring break.  It would also be a fun surprise as a non candy Easter egg filler.

Pom Pom Chick Tutorial

Materials Needed:

• 12 inch (30.5 cm) piece of yellow yarn
• 4 (yards (3.66 meters) of yellow yarn
• metal dinner fork (one with 4 tines)
• wiggly eyes
• yellow and orange card stock
• scissors
• craft glue (We used Tacky Glue.)

Directions:

Thread the shorter piece of yarn through the middle tines  of the fork, making sure there is an equal amount on both sides.

While holding the shorter piece of yarn in place, start wrapping the longer piece of yarn around the base of the fork.  Be sure to cross over the end of the yarn as you wrap.   Keep the yarn snug and close together as you continue wrapping up towards the end of the fork.  When you are about 1/4 inch away from the tip, start wrapping back towards the fork’s base.

Continue wrapping until you are out of yarn.  Use the tip of your scissors to tuck the loose end of the yarn under the wrapped strands.

Pull the ends of the shorter piece of yarn up, taking the back piece up through the center tines.  Tie the ends together.

Slide the yarn off the fork and flip it over.  Bring the ends of the yarn around to the back and tie it tightly.  Tie it a second time to secure it.

Use the scissors to cut the loops on both sides of the pom pom.  We found it helps to go slow and to use the very tip of the scissors.  Be sure to cut all the loops.

Then use your scissors to cut the long strands of yarn and to trim the rest of the pom pom strands to all the same length.  Roll the pom pom in your hands to even it out and make it look more round.  Trim as necessary.

After making a pom-pom, it is time to turn it into a cute, fuzzy chick.

Cut a small oval from orange card stock.  Fold the oval in half and crease it.  Use a small dab of glue on the folded edge and glue it to your chick, tucking it into the yarn a bit.

Use tacky glue to glue on 2 wiggly eyes.

Cut 2 matching wings from your yellow card stock.  Ours were approximate 1/2 inch (1.25 cm)  long.  Add a bit of glue to both sides of the wing and then wiggle it in between the yarn to glue it in place.

This pom pom chick has seen plenty of pretend play this week.  Make a batch of chicks to use as non candy Easter egg filler.   Or get the kids together over spring break and make a few as a fun kids spring craft.

Hundreds of unmarked pages in spiral notebooks, sharpened pencils with perfect erasers, and the smell of new crayons — I’ve always love the possibilities new school supplies signify.  But sometimes kids need something to help them get excited about using those supplies.  This simple mouse pencil topper is a fun back to school craft.  It’s also a cute craft to go with the popular Library Mouse books.

These pencil toppers look cute, and make it more fun to use those pencils when doing homework.

Materials Needed:

• Craft Foam
• Wiggly Eyes
• Glue Stick
• Variety of Craft Buttons
• Scissors
• Pen
• Free Mouse Pencil Topper Template (optional)

Make Your Own Mouse Pencil Topper

Use the template to trace the mouse shape on the craft foam, and then cut it out.  (You can also freehand the shape if desired.)  Cut the 2 horizontal lines towards the bottom of the mouse’s body.  This is where your pencil will stick through.

Use your glue stick to add wiggly eyes.  Add buttons for the mouse’s nose and ears.  Your child may choose to decorate the mouse with lots of buttons — let them get creative!

Once the glue dries, slide your pencil into the slots of your pencil topper, forming his tail.   You’re ready to write in style!

We recently read one of our favorite books that features several jungle animals.  The kids couldn’t wait to do this fun snake craft, inspired by one of the characters in the book.

Snake Craft

Materials Needed:

• Paper Plates
• Markers or Crayons
• Googly Eyes
• Sliver of Red Ribbon (or construction paper)
• Glue

Cut each paper plate into a spiral, starting at the outer edge and working towards the middle.

Leave a circle of approximately 2 inches uncut in the center.  You can trim this into a triangular shape to become your snake’s head.

For younger children you can lightly draw the spiral shape for them to cut.

Challenge your child to create their own pattern for their snake.  For very young children you might want to try a simple AB pattern.  Older preschoolers could try a more difficult pattern.

Or, you can let them decorate it any way they’d like.

Once the snakes are colored, glue on googly eyes and add a small sliver of red ribbon or construction paper for the snake’s tongue.

Paper Plate Snake Craft for Trunk Trouble

This craft and book activity went perfectly with one of our favorite picture books,  Trunk Trouble: Jungle Tales.

Trunk Trouble is a cute story about 3 elephants who, in a hurry to get home for dinner, somehow get their trunks all tangled together.

Several animals come along to help them.  One of them is Seymour the snake.

The kids love when I read Seymour’s part, stretching out all the “S” sounds — just the way the book has it printed.  The story always has them giggling, and the pictures in the book are spectacular.

Since Seymour the snake is one of their favorite characters, we decided to make this snake craft to go with the book.

Activity

To demonstrate to the kids just how tricky it would be to have your trunk tangled like the elephants in the story, we played our own tangled trunks game.

Start off standing in a circle.  Have everyone put their hands in the center and grab hold of another person’s hand.

Their arms will look quite tangled.

The trick is to get untangled without letting go.  (This is loads of fun when you do it with a slightly larger group of kids!)

This simple snake craft is fun to make on its own.  It also pairs great with a jungle-themed picture book like Trunk Trouble.
