Dr Seuss ABC Activities 

Dr. Seuss ABC Book Activities —  Simple activities inspired by Dr. Seuss’s ABC Book to help kids recognize the letters.

Cat in the Hat Alphabet Game  —  Kids will love practicing their ABC’s with this fun printable game. It includes both uppercase and lowercase letters. 

Red Fish, Blue Fish ABC Match Up —  This fun twist to the classic memory game is a great way for little ones to work on matching upper and lower case letters.  

Seuss-Inspired ABC Scavenger Hunt —  Send your child on a scavenger hunt for “Seussical” items for each letter of the alphabet.  

Printable Make Your Own ABC Book —  Kids will have fun creating their own miniature ABC book. 

Letter Fun with the Cat in the Hat —  This letter game uses that iconic red and white hat that we love to create a fun way to work on letters and the letter sounds.

Gross Motor Activities for the ABC Book —  This is such a fun way to go through the ABC Book together!  Your child will have fun pretending to be an alligator, being a “lion licking lollipops,” pretending to play violin, and so much more.  

Green Eggs and Ham Color Word Eggs —  Work on color words, and the letters used in each of those words, with this simple activity that uses plastic eggs. 

Phonics Activities — Each inspired by a Dr. Seuss book, these activities are a fun way to help kids begin to recognize the sounds each letter makes and how to put them together when reading.

Over the years we have enjoyed several Dr. Seuss activities inspired by his books.   

One of our favorites for early readers is this Dr. Seuss sight words game.

This simple Dr. Seuss game makes sight word practice at home more fun.   It’s perfect to do in March, while schools are often celebrating the author’s birthday.

You will also love these other Dr. Seuss sight words activities and  Dr. Seuss File Folder Games for preschool & kindergarten.   

Dr. Seuss Sight Words Game

You will need 9 plain white note cards.  You could also cut your own cards out of a piece of white card stock.    

Use markers to draw a hat similar to the Cat in the Hat’s hat on each card.  (You could also do this on the computer and print it out if you have access to a color printer.)

With a black marker write one sight word at the bottom of each card.    I chose to use all rhyming words for our cards, making it easier to sound out unknown words.  (And very Seuss-like, too!)   But you can use whichever sight words your child is working on at the moment.  

Draw a small birthday cake on a piece of scrap paper.  It needs to be small enough to hide under one of the note cards.  

Why the birthday cake?  To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2.  If you plan on doing this activity at a different time of year, simply draw (or print out) a picture of the Cat in the Hat for your child to find instead.

Dr. Seuss Reading Game

To play, flip all 9 cards over.  

Hide the birthday cake (or cat) under one of the cards while your child is not looking.

Have your child flip over the cards, one at a time and read the word on the card. 

If they read the word correctly, it stays face up. 

If they read the word incorrectly, read it for them, and then place it upside down again.  

The game ends when they find the hidden birthday cake and correctly read the card it is hidden under.  

How many cards can they read before they find the cake?  

Both my preschooler and kindergartner were able to play this game.  

The kindergartner already knew several of the words in this DIY sight word game and was easily able to sound out the others.

I LOVED that the preschooler was also able to play by sounding out the first letter and then add “at” to it and putting it all together.  He was so excited to read the words “mat,” “hat,” and “rat!”  (And I was excited to watch those wheels in his head turning!)

This Cat in the Hat craft was fun to do after playing the game. 

You can easily modify this game to meet the needs of your child.  Once they are feeling confident in getting through 9 cards, try setting it up with 12 or 15 cards for them to read.  

I hope your child enjoys this Dr. Seuss sight words game as much as we did.

Seuss Land—  A colorful game for young kids, played like the classic Candy Land game.

Lorax Math Game —  This is perfect for kids who are working on adding or subtracting skills.

Making the decision as to which preschool to choose can be a difficult one.  Several years ago, I got together with some other moms and compiled a list of questions to ask when choosing a preschool.  I’d like to share them with you today.

Here are the top 10 questions to ask when choosing a preschool.

1. The price. (This can be a big issue; some places are outrageous!)
2. The class size and/or student to teacher ratio.
3. Is the program learning through play based?
4. Do I need to volunteer time or fundraise?  (I had never thought of this one!)
5. Do they go on field trips?
6. What are the disciplinary actions?
7. What  safety precautions are taken? (How secure is the building they are in, and is it easy for a stranger to walk in?)
8. Are the teachers all certified through the state?
9. The school’s worldview and what will be taught.
10. What is the sick policy? (Are children to stay home for at least a day after having a fever?)

We have way too many of those candy hearts from Valentine’s Day.  I decided to pull a few out for some candy learning activities this week, including an easy to set up candy heart experiment.

To set up for the experiment, I labeled 4 clear glasses: hot water, water, vinegar, and vinegar and baking soda.

Then I asked the kindergartner and preschooler for their hypothesis on which of the 4 liquids would dissolve the candy hearts the fastest.

The preschooler thought that vinegar and baking soda would; the kindergartner chose vinegar.

Then I carefully filled each glass with its labeled liquid.  (Make sure you use a container that can hold hot liquids!)  The kids took turns dropping in one candy heart per glass.

Right away the one with baking soda and vinegar had their attention!  The candy heart was hidden amid the bubbling and fizzing mixture.

To speed up the process, we tried stirring each glass carefully. 

The kids were surprised by the results; the hot water dissolved the candy heart much faster than any of the other 3 containers!

After our candy science experiment, we revisited our past candy heart activities, and used the candy hearts to work on patterns, and even did some simple addition facts using the candy hearts as manipulatives.

Of course, using them for subtraction, and eating them as we went, was the biggest hit!
